We’re getting a look at two very different suits of armor both derived from Stark Tech. It’s Iron Monger and Rescue under the spotlight.
Yesterday we got a look at Kang and Iron Lad. Today, we’re getting a preview of the other two characters coming in that same Character Pack for Marvel: Crisis Protocol. It’s time for Iron Monger and Rescue to showcase what all that Stark Tech is being used for!
Oh and before we start, I did want to point out that both Iron Monger and Rescue do look to have some alternate build options. Iron Monger has the option for some rockets coming out of his back while Rescue has an options with or without the full helmet. Neat!
Iron Monger
Iron Monger is joining the game as a large, size 4 model on a 65mm base! While that might not seem like a crazy thing, he’s the first Threat 3 character of that size. Which has some neat implications when you look at the rest of his kit. Defensively, he’s 3/3/3 with 6/5 Stamina. He’s “only” got a short move but if you’ve played any games with a 65mm base miniature then you know that’s PLENTY of movement. He’s got flight, too so getting around won’t be a problem. Couple that with his 2 cost Jump Jet power (which is a range 1 place ability for himself) and he’s going to be just fine in the movement department.
Attack-wise he’s got a builder with his Integrated Armaments. It’s a range 3 attack for 5 dice. What’s interesting is you can choose between physical or energy on this one, too. That’s a nice touch. It’s not flashy but it can be effective. His spender attack is Aggressive Acquisition. This one is a physical attack at range 2 for 7 dice. It cost 4 power but on a wild you can throw the target away medium (if they are size 3 or less). Additionally, if you get a hit and a crit, you also trigger Hostile Takeover. This is a sneaky way to snatch an Asset or Civilian token to Iron Monger’s control.
For his other powers he’s got Onboard Tactical Computer for 2 power. It allows for up to 2 dice to be rerolled for an attack. Again, not flashy, but it should help Iron Monger be fairly consistent on his attacks. Finally, we have Reinforced Armor Plating. This is a basic damage reduction of 1 down to a minimum of 1. That can make that stamina pool last a lot longer than your opponents might expect.
I think Iron Monger is certainly going to find a place in various rosters. The novelty of a Threat 3 on a 65mm base is appealing by itself. But he’s also got a pair of Team Tactic Cards worth a read.
You can see both cards above and while a big 10 dice attack for 4 energy is nice, I think the Corporate Espionage card might be more useful. This one can allow Iron Monger to force the enemy to waste actions by displacing them after attacks. I could very easily see him stealing an objective and when they try to get it back he can simply push them away after the attack. Keep a look out for Iron Monger. He’s going to be a go to for a lot of lists in the future!
Rescue
Pepper Potts, aka Rescue is here with her very own armor! Also a Threat 3 she fills a very different role on the tabletop and that’s as a great support character. Defensively she’s got 4/3/3 and 5/6 stamina. She moves medium and is size 2 as well. With flight she’s going to be able to easily traverse the board. That said, she’s got a great toolkit for helping your team out so let’s cover those attacks first.
Triage is an energy based attack. It’s range 4 for 5 dice and it’s a gainer for a good reason. You see, it won’t do more than 1 damage per attack. Still, it’s really good for healing your team thanks to the Medic ability. On hits, she can heal other allied characters within range 3 for 1 damage per hit rolled. Or you can opt to remove 1 special condition outright. This makes her a really great way to “cure” allies. Her spender is another energy attack. Sonic Barrage is a beam 4 for 7 dice and it takes 4 power. On wilds, it applies stun. Honestly, that’s a pretty nice beam; simple and effective.
Now we get to the really cool stuff in her toolset. Life Support Systems is a 1 cost power that allows Rescue to shake. It’s great for removing conditions and allowing her to save on actions for other things. Medevac is a 3 cost power and it’s freaking great! It’s an Action: which means it’s going to take up one of your actions for the turn but it does a lot. First you get a speed boost and can advance Long. Then you can choose another allied character with an activated token within range 2. You get a further move because you can then place her within range 1 of the target character. Then you can heal the Activated Character for 2 damage OR by removing 1 special condition. It’s only a once per turn ability but that’s QUITE a big distance boost.
Rescue also has Sonic Force Fields for 2. This ability can add 2 dice to defense rolls for herself or allied characters within range 3 when the attack is energy or physical based. It also helps for dodge rolls, too. And finally we have Rescue Armor which is another damage reduction ability by 1 down to a minimum of 1. Additionally, after healing an ally, she gains 1 power as well. This is a great support kit and that’s before we get to her team tactic cards.
Danger Management works on her or on Tony Stark and it gives them both the Dynamic Response rule. For 2 energy, it allows them to make a cost 0 attack out of sequence. Not too shabby. Following that up she’s also got The Best Defense card which is another energy attack at range 5 for 5 dice. What’s interesting about this attack is that it pushes the target away Short. Additionally, it goes off AGAIN on the same target. If I’m reading this right, you’re basically getting to shove the target short twice! That’s great for moving folks out of position.
