Even though Larian Studios is hard at work on the new Divinity, they still somehow found time for one last “final” Baldur’s Gate 3 patch.

It is heartening to me to see that even critically acclaimed developers still put have the equivalent of releasing a file that ends in something like project_final_FINAL_forreal-updated-USETHISONE(2)”. That little parenthetical 2 is a knife in the heart sometimes. But it’s nice to know that it’s out there – and I say this lovingly, and gratefully, because Larian has just put out a surprise new “final_FINAL” patch for Baldur’s Gate 3 despite being focused on the incredible-looking new Divinity.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Gets Surprise New Patch

The new patch released with little in the way of fanfare or even official patch notes. In fact, the developers explained on reddit what the small 120 MB update actually does. It’s not a huge new addition of gameplay or anything like that. Nor is there any new content.

But it still tackles an important, persistent issue. If you’ve been playing lately, you might have run into an issue where the game would crash when trying to load saves in Act 2 or 3 or progressing from Act 2 to Act 3. I myself had an Honour Mode run that just didn’t want to work and had been considering starting anew (which is daunting when you’re in the middle of a run you like).

Enter the new patch. Which, per Larian’s community manager on reddit, fixes these issues.

“Turns out there were a few crashes and technical issues still knocking about, this small fix should resolve some issues with loading saves or trying to progress from Act 2 into Act 3!”

I have tried it myself, and can verify that my save now loads! Which is great, because this time, I might actually save Halsin when he goes into the Shadowfell. Though I dunno that I’ll pull it off. When you play on Honour Mode, you gotta take your lumps, and sometimes the win is just you get to keep playing. And I’ve tried that fight with three different characters and it’s mean every time. Especially when you can’t save scum. Two bad rolls and that’s it for everyone’s favorite bear man.

At any rate, the new patch may have restored your progress! It should be live across all platforms, so if you had been experiencing a cross-play mismatch that should be resolved as well!

And if you haven’t in a while, it’s probably time to start another playthrough! Maybe you’ll be a druid this time?
