Magpie Games’ Temeraire RPG has made triple its goal in the first hour or so of its Kickstarter campaign, with a month still to go.

This is one I’ve been waiting for for a while – Magpie Games Temeraire RPG, based on the stories of Naomi Novik’s world of the Napoleonic wars but with dragons, is out on Kickstarter. Little surprise that it’s a smashing success already. It’s already hit triple its funding goal, and I imagine it’ll go quite a bit further, which is good news for folks hoping for stretch goals and other exclusive rewards. Let’s take a look.

Temeraire RPG – Kickstarting Now

If you’ve never read the Temeraire series, calling it the Napoleonic wars but with dragons is an oversimplification. The books delve into political machinations, romantic intrigues and entanglements, and of course, a whole lot of the inner world and life of dragons. It’s very appealing to the right kind of nerd.

Especially since the RPG has rules for doing it all. From fighting in the skies as an aviator, to the byzantine battlefield that is love among the aristocracy, to just y’know, being a dragon. And that last one is where the game really starts to stand out. The breadth and scope of the Temeraire RPG is ambitious.

But then, that’s exactly what you’d want out of a historical fantasy RPG designed to let you tell sweeping stories that last a while:

“Temeraire: The Roleplaying Game is a way for you to experience the excitement of draconic battles and Regency era drama all for yourself! The tabletop roleplaying game supports approximately 3-5 players, with one taking on the role of a gamemaster responsible for portraying the world and adjudicating the rules, and the rest taking on the role of their own individual character. The game is designed for ongoing stories, as the characters pursue their dreams and face the consequences of their choices.

In this game, you and your friends create characters—both humans and dragons!—who are embroiled in the conflicts of the Napoleonic age. Caught between their duties and their desires, your characters must balance their obligations to country, unit, and each other against their hearts’ strongest yearnings.”

If you’re curious as to how it plays, you can check out the free quickstart rules right here. Get a taste of the Aedana System that Magpie has spun up for this game. And you’ll probably want to, because the heart of this campaign – and indeed, the RPG – is the core rulebook for Temeraire. There are other books as well, including the World of Wings supplement, GM Screen and custom world map. But the core rules are where the game takes wing.

And speaking of world maps, if you back within the first 60 hours, you get a free cloth map of the world. But I will point out you already mostly know what that world looks like. However this one is nicely illustrated.
