The Kroot are getting a new Combat Patrol for Warhammer 40,000. Is now the time to call in the Kroot Mercs to your army?
The T’au aren’t just getting a pair of new faces to head their Greater Good PR Campaign. There’s also some auxiliaries coming to help out. With the new Kroot Combat Patrol coming it might be a good time to start a new Kroot force. Or add on to an existing one. But let’s breakdown the pricing of this Combat Patrol to find out. Then we can talk about some next steps.
Kroot Combat Patrol Pricing Breakdown
Contents
10x Kroot with 2x Kroot Hounds = $69
Total Individual MSRP: $242
Total Savings: $72
So far, of the three out of four new Combat Patrols we’ve looked at closely, this is the best dollar amount deal of the batch. That said it’s also the one that you can actually get all the units for individually because they’ve been out for over a year. Well, if you can find them in stock at least. As of posting these units are temporarily out of stock on GW’s website.
Anyhow, is this a good starter box? If you want to focus on Kroot it’s really hard to beat. If you’re leaning towards starting a Kroot focused army then the Auxiliary Cadre is the Detachment for you. Otherwise, you’re really just splashing some Kroot into a primarily T’au force. Not that there’s anything wrong with that option.
Should you buy more than one? My main hold up for that is the Farstalkers team. That was originally a Kill Team box and while they are 85 points, I do wonder if a standard Kroot Carinvore squad would have been a better option. Personally, I’d go one-and-done here. But I’m also not a Kroot player and I don’t have a strong attachment to anything else in this box. I do like the look of the Krootox units. But again, I’m kind of iffy on buying two regardless.
Kroot Next Steps?
First up, if you don’t have the T’au Codex, you’ll want to get that. Then again, there’s the (not so subtle) hints at a new edition around the corner. Do you want to wait to see what happens or do you want to dive right in and hopefully get your games in before the rumored swap? That’s up to you. Honestly, the most annoying part about trying to do the next steps for a Kroot army is the fact that the majority of the Kroot-specific units are out of stock.
Maybe that is a sign to wait on starting that Kroot army of your dreams? Unless your local store has a bunch of backstock, maybe plan around that. There ARE Kroot character options in stock at least. So you can snag the Trail Shaper, Flesh Shaper, and/or War Shapers. You can’t really build a 2,000 list with the Combat Patrol and 3 characters however. Did you want to add in some Vespids? I guess that’s an option, too.
On the flip side there’s plenty of T’au specific units in stock! Devilfish are handy transports to have on hand. I don’t know how much you want to add other T’au units into the list however. I’ve always been in favor of splashing Kroot into a T’au army to act as the close-combat/speed bumps before the enemy melee units get locked into close combat. Maybe that’s the route you want to take as well.
For now, my honest recommendation is that if you’re really into Kroot grab the Combat Patrol and play some Combat Patrol games until the next edition. Hopefully by then GW has the rest of the Kroot back in stock and/or the next edition has a Faction Pack update for T’au (and thus the Kroot) army and you can plan accordingly.
Sound of in the comments if you’re going to snag a Kroot Combat Patrol. What are you going to grab after?
