A new character pack for Marvel: Crisis Protocol is bringing some of the most advanced armors in Marvel to the tabletop!
Is it time for the Armor Wars? This new character pack is sure making me think so! Atomic Mass Games sent me a review copy of the new Iron Lad, Iron Monger, Kang The Conqueror & Rescue pack (boy that’s a mouthful). In showed up in the mail late yesterday and I was able to take photos and build all the miniatures. I’m pretty stoked to get to bring this one to you so let’s dive in!
I’m impressed with this one because of the multiple options these characters have for assembly. We’ll get into all that in a bit. For now let’s just talk about the contents.
Iron Lad, Iron Monger, Kang The Conqueror & Rescue Unboxed
One of the first things I thought when I got the box was “why is this one so much bigger than some of the other Character Packs. I’m not sure because the baggies seemed like the same size…
I guess that’s a slightly larger set of sprues but again, everything is in it’s own bag. This is also one of those times where I’m very glad the sprues were in their own bags, too. The Team Tactic Cards and Character Cards are in their own bag and you get a full play set in all the supported languages. This is pretty standard from AMG.
If you’re looking for a deeper dive on the rule for these characters, we already did that. Kang had his own run down. I mean, Iron Lad was included in that article but they are the same dude just at different points in time. Sort of. It’s complicated “Because Comics!” …and Time Travel. Iron Monger and Rescue got a different breakdown.
The same goes for their character cards. If you want a much higher rez image(s) of those you can find them at the links above. Now, let’s look at those sprues!
Those two bits on the left side broke off in transit. Again, this is why AMG puts their sprues in baggies. Everything was in the same bag so those didn’t get lost. Iron Monger ended up with two sprues worth of bits and the large (60mm) base. Kang has his own custom base (it’s 50mm) and Iron Lad and Rescue both come with the standard 35mm bases.
And like I mentioned I did get to assemble them! So let’s talk about that process.
Kang The Conqueror
Kang’s build was really easy. The custom base means he’s only going slot in one way. Same with most of his parts. There are a pair of left arms you can choose from when building as well. You can opt for an empty fist or holding a big ol’ rifle. I opted for “future gun” and went with that. I also really like the nod to the time travelling happening here. There’s clearly an Egyptian statue he’s teleporting on/through. If you know his history that’s direct nod to his Rama Tut persona. Again, this was a quick build and I really like the sculpt. And that’s not just Kang editing my writing from the future.
Iron Lad
Iron Lad was really the only miniature in this box that didn’t come with any extra options for building him. I will say that his base was really cool as it’s got that thruster/explosion happening. That part is actually 3 parts that you glue together and it all fits together really well. It’s also flush on the bottom so gluing it to a base was clean. The thruster jet coming out of Iron Lad’s foot and the thruster column you attach to the base were a little tricky. So be careful with those. I’d strongly recommend letting that column set before you attach Iron Lad. I used a mix of super glue/quick set and plastic glue to assemble him here. The super glue/quick set was used just as extra support so the plastic glue could do it’s thing and bond everything.
I also had a magnetized base pre-built so I was able to attach Iron Lad to the thruster column and then fix him to a slanted metal ruler at an angle. This let gravity do it’s thing and help it hold him in place instead of pulling him off the base. If you’ve ever built the Iron Man miniature from the Earth’s Mightiest Core Set you know what I’m talking about.
Anyhow, the rest of his mini was really easy to build. No other notes there. I think the end result speaks for itself and I really like how it turned out.
Rescue
I was really not expecting Rescue (aka Pepper Potts) to come with this many modeling options. Not only does she have two sets of arms, she’s also got an alternate head (with or without a helmet) and that energy shield. I didn’t even know the energy shield was a thing before I opened this box so I had to figure out how to build that in this sculpt. This was a fun one to play around with in terms of what options.
Anyhow, I think she was the easiest from the pack to build overall. Aside from the choices, her miniature goes together really effortlessly and there’s not a lot of fiddly bits to screw up. Unless you go with the hair/head option. Maybe. That really didn’t look too bad to be honest. She’s a cool character and I’m looking forward to trying out some lists with her in it now.
Iron Monger
This miniature might be my favorite from this batch. I’m having a tough time deciding. Iron Monger is just so big and bulky! I really like how this one turned out. He was the first one I built from this batch and he definitely took the longest but that’s mostly because he’s got the most bits. He wasn’t particularly difficult to build either. Just a lot of clipping, cleaning, and attaching. I also really like that AMG made those rockets on his back optional.
Those bits have a peg at the very bottom of the smoke trail and I get the feeling you’re supposed to glue them into his back. But I also think those can be glue however you think looks the coolest. If you’re one of those people with a bunch of tiny magnets you could even magnetize them all. I’m not that good with magnets so I probably not going to do go that route. I am, however, keeping these around. I want to use some sticky tac so attach them on turns when I use Iron Monger’s Shock and Awe Team Tactic Card. I think that will look awesome.
