Heritage Auctions has placed the original painting for the wraparound cover for The Official Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Coloring Album onto the block at the April 4, 2026 Comic Cover Art Showcase Auction.
This painting is a truly unique piece, where underground comix artwork and early D&D covers collided. Greg Irons began his career as a poster designer for Bill Graham, a manager and rock promoter who made the Fillmore and Winterland Ballroom famous in the 60s San Francisco area by hosting The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and Big Brother and the Holding Company with Janis Joplin. He later went on to work on The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine movie and in the 70s, became a book illustrator and tattoo artist. Irons also delved into the underground comix world (see “ICv2 Interview Transcript” and also, “‘The Transformation of Comics Into Comix’“) with Last Gasp’s Slow Death (see “Last Gasp“) and Print Mint’s Light Comitragies (1971).
During his career as a illustrator, he produced a wraparound cover painting for The Official Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Coloring Album for TSR Hobbies. This incredibly rare and seldom heard of AD&D book was a coloring book that contained an adventure module by Gary Gygax. Five years after the book was released, Irons was killed when he was struck by a bus in Thailand; he was age 37 when he tragically passed. Swamp Thing #39 (1985), written by Alan Moore, was dedicated in Irons’ honor.
The painting was rendered in acrylic paints on an oversized illustration board, measuring 32″ by 21″. Bidding for this piece currently stands at $3,300.
