The Legio Custodes have a new Battle Group box coming and it’s looking like a great deal. Time to do some math to find out for sure.
If you’re thinking about starting a new Legio Custodes army for The Horus Heresy (or for 40k for that matter) the new Legio Custodes Battle Group is packed with a bunch of all new plastic kits. This is be the first crack at all these new kits as well. We also can confirm that the price point on this box will be $255. For what you’re getting this seems like a good deal. However, we can do some comparison to find out if this really is a good as it looks.
Legio Custodes Battle Group Pricing Breakdown
Contents:
Shield Captain (based on 40k Shield-Captain) $43.50
6x Custodian Guard (based on 40k Custodian Guard) $65*
6x Sentinel Guard (based on 40k Custodian Wardens) $65*
Contemptor-Achillus Dreadnought/Contemptor-Galatus Dreadnought (based on Contemptor Dreadnought) $65**
Caladius Annihilator grav-tank (based on Venerable Land Raider) $96***
Total Estimated Individual MSRP: $334.50
Total Estimated Savings: $79.50
*That’s assuming the are sold in boxes of 6 and not boxes of 3. Based on the kits and squad size, I think it’s worth considering they might be priced close to the Allarus Terminator Armour units at $60 per 3. In which case, those would actually be $120 units.
**There’s an obvious difference in the kits in terms of extra bits. I’m estimating on the low side with the basic Contemptor Dreadnought here. I wouldn’t be shocked if this new Contemptor-Achillus Dreadnought was closer to the $80 range when it’s released solo. I also considered the Forge World price as a baseline as well.
***I considered the Forge World verison of the Caladius Annihilator grav-tank as a base price here. But I think the Land Raider is probably going to be a more accurate representation.
Obviously there’s a lot of caveats here. Since all of these kits are new plastic versions or updates to other kits, we don’t have firm pricing. However, I don’t think this pricing structure is that far off. If anything I think this box could end up being MORE of a discount overall. That’s good news for fans of the Legio Custodes who can get their hands on this Battle Group Box.
What’s Next For The Custodes?
Unfortunately, because this army is getting a bunch of new rules/updates with the Liber Custodes book launching along side the army I don’t have any good advice for next steps. At least for the Horus Heresy. If you’re looking to make this an army you can play in both 40k and the Horus Heresy, practically all of these units will be usable. You can point out a list right now. The only funky part is that some of the unit numbers don’t line-up exactly.
You could consider snagging the Adeptus Custodes Combat Patrol as well. If you prefer these versions of the armor. Not to mention the units included. But really you should get the codex and point things out first and foremost. The Custodes (in both HH and 40k) are a very elite and small model count army. It’s easy to over spend on units with them so I highly encourage you to build out a list first.
There’s a few different build options as well. At least for 40k right now. But again, we’ve got a new 40k edition on the horizon so that could all blow-up soon, too. There’s a lot of change coming for either era of the Custodes. It might be a good idea to snag a Battle Group box and sit on it until the dust settles. And for the Horus Heresy, you can always ally the Legio Custodes into a Loyalist army, too!
For the Horus Heresy, I really like the standard infantry of the Custodes. But for 40k, those Dawn Eagle Jetbikes are awesome.
