The Legio Custodes Battlegroup has arrived in the studio and we’ve got them built! These new plastics are amazing.

I know these are for The Horus Heresy but if I was a 40k Custodes player, I’d be eyeing these new kits REAL HARD. The sculpts look way more detailed and pretty freakin’ epic. And as I’ve talked about before there’s a bunch of 1:1 unit “swaps” here between 40k and Horus Heresy. Let’s get to the miniatures!

Shield Captain

So our very own Goatboy built all these miniatures this time around. I think they look fantastic. My only gripe is that I personally prefer the helmet option. But I feel that way about ALL my wargaming miniatures that are marching to war regardless of the army. Why would you go into battle with your most vulnerable part unprotected? Wear your helmet.

Anyhow, the Shield Captain has an overwhelming amount of details. Honestly, I’m glad they wear golden armor because if I had to paint every individual detail differently I’d never finish this army. That said, I think these sculpts are really impressive with the sheer amount of stuff going on. I think a simple color scheme works well to allow those details through. But you do you!

Custodian Guard

While these Custodes don’t have quite as much detail as the Shield Captain they are still packing in quite a bit! I do think they look leaner than their previous 40k incarnations and I don’t think that’s a bad thing. The proportions look more appropriate and less blocky/cartoon to me. These versions look more athletic. It’s as if they are just as heavily armored but faster at the same time.

Sentinel Guard

While I’ve always thought the idea of a bolt weapon on a stick was kind of silly (seriously how do you reload efficiently) these Sentinels sure look intimidating. I for sure would not want to deal with them up close. I also most feel like being down range and away from them would safer…

Anyhow, these miniatures are basically the same legs and torsos. But that’s not a bad thing! I like them overall.

Contemptor-Galatus Dreadnought

The Custodes version of a Contemptor Dreadnought is an absolute unit. This is another really impressive kit and I think this could really be a centerpiece miniature in an army. I’m also impressed with the poses you can strike with this kit. I think the community is going to have a lot of fun with this and the spear version, too.

Caladius Annihilator

For a former Forge World kit, I think this one does a great job of being converted over to plastic. I’m not a fan of working with resin and a plastic version should save on weight and still have a ton of detail. I do like the grav panels and the overall look of this one quite a bit. It’s a good nod to the Jetbikes and the unique equipment of the Legio Custodes.

The new Battlegroup box is going up for pre-order this weekend from Games Workshop. It should be a pretty good deal for anyone looking to play a new Custodes army in The Horus Heresy (or 40k for that matter).
