The RX-104FF Penelope is the other half of a pair of Gundams fated to face each other in fight and flight mode. Here’s what it could do.
Mobile Suits go to battle with each other all the time, across a variety of arenas. But it is a rare occurrence indeed for two Gundam-type Mobile Suits to fight each other. Rarer still for it to be an epic battle in the skies above Earth. And yet, that’s exactly where the RX-105 Ξ Gundam and the RX-104FF Penelope fought each other in the culmination of a destined fight between two pilots, both making use of the Psycommu-system and everything.
Two ideals. Two Gundams. A classic showdown. Especially since the Penelope was another of the 5th-generation Mobile Suits, in the same vein as the RX-105. And both made use of the Minovsky Fixed Flight System – though the Penelope was actually two Gundams in one, weirdly enough.
The RX-104FF Penelope – Two Gundams For The Price Of One Flight System
The secret of the RX-104FF Penelope is that it’s another mode for the versatile RX-104 Odysseus Gundam. But whether we’re talking about Odysseus or Penelope, the underlying principle is the same. This generation of Mobile Suit was designed to equip a variety of systems, including composite weapons (so it could punch above its weight), or as the Penelope, to mount the Minovsky Fixed Flight Unit.
This meant that it could operate both on the ground and in the air with relative ease. Especially since the Beam Barrier system allowed it to achieve supersonic speeds. And like the Xi Gundam, the RX-104FF Penelope was made out of Gundarium Alloy and stood 26 meters tall. Though the Penelope was lighter, and boasted a higher maximum power output – its reactor generated 4050 KW as opposed to the Xi’s 3980 KW.
What was that extra power for? A surprising array of weaponry. Where the Xi Gundam integrated all capabilities into one Mobile Suit, the Penelope with the attached FF Unit, was able to utilize ‘composite weapon modules’ mounted on its arms. These could house: a mega particle cannon, a beam saber, and a missile array, all in the same module.
And that’s in addition to the powerful Beam Rifle that it carried. Supporting the Beam Rifle, were a variety of shaped energy packs, mounted on the Penelope’s engine and behind the trigger guard. This meant the RX-104FF could keep up a sustained barrage of firepower without worrying about running dry. Or it could take part in multiple engagements without needing to stop.
The Penelope also sported a pair of shoulder-mounted beam cannons mounted in the FF system. This enabled it to fire a surprisingly deadly volley up close and personal. Though
Of course, the Psycommu-system is the real powerhouse here. It enables a pilot to fight with superhuman aptitude – and just as with the Xi Gundam, the RX-104FF Penelope mounts a Funnel Missile system. These Psycommu-enabled missiles can be operated by the pilot, allowing them to track targets even in Minovsky particle dense environs. With both Gundams so evenly matched, it all comes down to who the better pilot is. And that is a question that perhaps only the Sorcery of Circe can answer…
Speaking of which, when are we gonna get that NA release?
