Never underestimate the creative depths that modders will plumb. There’s a team of modders recreating Baldur’s Gate inside Baldur’s Gate 3.
Withers with big naturals was only the beginning. I suspect we’re only beginning to see the length and breadth of the creativity of the Baldur’s Gate 3 community. You might recall a while back when Larian released its modding tools, the tools for creating your own levels and campaign were locked away (presumably under orders from Hasbro), but modders found ways to unlock the full dev tools because of the way Larian had to structure the implementation. Certainly, no one could have seen it coming. Wink.
And now, a year and a half later, we’re starting to see the potential firepower of the full might of the modding community. Consider an ambitious new project that aims to put all of Baldur’s Gate 1 into Baldur’s Gate 3.
Return To Candlekeep: Deathbringer’s Reign – DEMO 1
It’s exactly what it says on the tin. And it all starts with the prologue to the original Baldur’s Gate, which famously takes place in and around Candlekeep. It’s up right now on Nexus Mods, you can find it linked at the end of the article.
The community and interest around the mod has skyrocketed, though, as the developer team headed up by a modder known as 786r786 recently told Rock Paper Shotgun:
“I received a lot of requests from fans of the original games to turn it into a full campaign, along with offers from some incredibly talented modders who volunteered to help. Making an isolated custom campaign is actually a bit easier than making an extension to the base game; you don’t have to account for the incredibly vast amount of scenarios present in vanilla BG3, and you have full control over the player’s environment.”
As far as the mod itself, the corwning glory right now is a demo that celebrates the first big milestone, the prologue of BG1:
Welcome to Deathbringer’s Reign! We are a team of modders remaking the entirety of the first Baldur’s Gate in BG3’s engine, and this mod allows you to play through our first milestone: the complete prologue in Candlekeep! Our next major goal is to release a second demo which expands the world to include the areas of High Hedge, Beregost, the Friendly Arm Inn, and Shipwreck’s Coast, as well as the classic companions found in those regions. We’re actively looking for volunteers to help us bring this massive vision to life; if you have any skills to contribute (such as Level Design, Writing, Modeling, Animating, Concept Art, or Programming) or just want to follow our progress, then consider joining our discord. Our discord also contains a FAQ to give you a better idea of the scope of our project and exactly how we plan on translating the original game into BG3’s engine.

I’m super excited to see how the project carries over. This is the kind of thing that can galvanize a community. It’s a big part of the reason that Baldur’s Gate 3 continues to be relevant years after itss release, and even after its final_Final_thistimeforrealFinal patches.
All that to say, there’s a whole world of creativity waiting to be discovered. And this is a big chunk of the iceberg, but even this feels like it’s barely the tip.
See you in Candlekeep!
