5-Minute One Piece Overview

5-Minute Dungeon is a chaotic, fast-paced card game. Players act as different members of a class D&D style adventuring party, explore a dungeon, kill some monsters, and defeat the boss all in about five minutes. In a world where many board games have made themselves into serious time commitments 5-Minutes Dungeon is a long-term, low-key, low-commitment, casual favorite game.

5-Minute Dungeon has expanded and released spin-offs over the years. But most recently is 5-Minute One Piece. Here, players will become the Straw Hats, form a pirate crew, and sail the Going Merry while recruiting allies, exploring islands, and taking on boss battles.

Games are played in real-time with no turn-taking. Instead, this is a race-against-the-clock game of card matching, strategy, and cooperation between you and your nakama. Every island introduces new, dynamic threats and encounters. And games are designed to feel like chaotic battles to survive to the next encounter. Which, honestly, is very on brand and perfect for One Piece.

How To Play 5-Minute One Piece

To start, players will pick which Straw Hat they would like to play as. This game is up to date with the live action Netflix adaptation, and not the anime or manga. So players are picking from Luffy, Nami, Sanji, Zoro, Usopp, or Chopper. I know, I’d like to play as a Robin, too. Maybe in a future expansion. Based on which Straw Hat you choose, you will grab the corresponding deck of cards as well as a Going Merry game board.

All members of the crew play whenever they would like and at the same time, there isn’t turn-taking in this game. With their decks, players must play cards that match attacking challenge cards in an attempt to match and clear as many away as possible. But other cards may turn up to help or hinder their progress.

For example, there may enemies to defeat, allies to provide boosts, and events that may bring surprises and twists to overcome. To win, your crew must defeat the boss between he time runs out.

Should I Buy This Game?

Do you like fast games? Do you like One Piece? If the answer to both is yes, then yes, you should definitely get 5-Minute One Piece. Games are quick in a way that’s fast-paced and addictive, so you’ll want to come back to this one time and time again. But there is also a ton of replayability. Defeating a boss once won’t make future games and battles less fun. Especially if you’re playing a different Straw Hat or playing with a different group.

If One Piece isn’t your thing though, I think I’d still suggest 5-Minute Dungeon for all of the same reasons. These games are great, they’re quick, and they’re silly in all of the right ways.
