Random House Worlds is continuing its focus on RPG-based fiction with the new Dragonlance novel by Weis and Hickman and a new Critical Role novel, both due out later this year.
Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman’s new Dragonlance novel, Dragonlance: War Wizard, will be released by Random House Worlds in hardcover on August 4. The new novel, the first in a new Dragonlance trilogy, follows the announcement by new Dungeons & Dragons head Dan Ayoub last fall that the famed writing team would be more involved in D&D going forward (see “New ‘D&D’ Head Brings Back Talent”).
The novel, set in the world of Krynn, tells the story of Magius, a boy with a rare gift for magic and his friend Huma, a young man studying for knighthood. While the pair would later fight together to defeat the Queen of Darkness, this story is of their early lives.
The 352-page novel will be released on August 4, 2026 at $30 MSRP.
Random House Worlds also announced their next Critical Role novel, Critical Role: The Mighty Nein – Children of Empire. Written by Hugo, Nebula, and Ignyte-nominated author Nibedita Sen, the 288-page novel is an official sequel to the Mighty Nein campaign from Critical Role, bridging the stories of Critical Role Campaigns Two, the Mighty Nein, and Three, Bells Hells.
Critical Role: The Mighty Nein–Children of Empire will be released on November 10, 2026 at $30 MSRP.
