It turns out, in space, you can roll a natural 20. At least that’s what an astronaut proved in a recent video making the rounds.

The Artemis II mission was a rousing success that offered humanity a glimpse of never-before-seen vistas and showed us all how love can reach beyond death and into the stars themselves. It’s absolutely beautiful.

But did you know that before that, months before Artemis II even approached the launchpad, another astronaut made another discovery? One that, in light of a renewed interest in space missions (the current administration’s habit of cutting science budgets for no discernible reason notwithstanding), is making the rounds with a new perspective?

D&D In Space – Astronaut Rabea Rogge Figured Out How To Do It

The astronaut in question is Rabea Rogge (the first German woman in space), who shared a video on her instagram this week, from the Fram2 mission last year of the die roll in question. It’s absolutely incredible to watch.

I mean, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more beautiful backdrop for a d20 check. It’s just a nice dose of hope – combo that with the video of the Artemis II launch and/or splashdown and a little bit of the Interstellar soundtrack or maybe just a ten hour loop of Slack Circus’ ‘Fabulous Secret Powers‘ (I won’t judge your inspirational music taste) and you’ll be basking in the wonder of humanity and nature and the cosmos all at once.

Anyway, playing an RPG in space is not only possible, but, if we keep exploring the stars, it’s becoming increasingly likely. What better game is there to bring with you than one that sparks imagination and wonder? Rogge couldn’t agree more, it seems:

“Dice in space? As a pen & paper nerd, I experimented with this 20-sided glass die (that caught the light beautifully) and found that the next round of D&D or siilar in space is saved!”

The technique itself is to roll it by throwing it upwards a little with enough of a spin that it “rolls.” Then you catch it, and see what number you’ve caught. In this case, it was a 7, but that’s honestly quite poetic for this. It should inspire you; even in space you still roll low. So what does it matter if you haven’t rolled above a 7 all session?

It’s literally out of this world. Anyway. I hope this video makes your week as much as it’s made mine.

“Rejoice, roleplaying in space is absolutely possible!”
