Wizards of the Coast offered advice on using a new feature on their Magic Companion app to help retain players for events.
Earlier this year, WotC introduced various updates to their Magic Companion app (see “‘Magic: The Gathering Companion’ App“). One of the features in this update was a favorite store feature, which allows players to designate their favorite store as part of their player profile. Recently, WotC released some advice explaining how WPN stores can begin use this feature to build and retain their player communities.
The favorite store feature is a key part of the new Magic Companion app software that allows players to find scheduled events in their favorite store via Wizards EventLink. WotC suggested that the key step WPN stores should take to begin using this feature to help retain players by giving them easier access to event listings is the simplest one: to just outright ask players to mark them as a favorite store in-between rounds at an event.
WotC made the point that players are already using the Magic Companion app to report results and find opponents at an event, and taking a couple minutes to mark the store they are playing in as a favorite isn’t too big of an ask. Instructions to do so are as follows: when signed into the Magic Companion app, tap the Locator tab at the bottom of the profile page; search the store by name and tap the heart icon to favorite the store. WotC also suggested that asking players to mark a store as their favorite is also a good idea while distributing prizes and while announcing the next event.
Once the store is marked as a favorite, the difficult part is more or less over for WPN retailers and a lot of the other processes are automated via EventLink. When the store schedules an event, players will get notifications in their inbox of the event from the app. They will also have easy access to the WPN store’s upcoming events, as the store’s event page will be under favorites. This feature is in no way tied to a store’s metrics, but it may help stores add players that visit for the first time as players can also mark more than one favorite store. WotC also mentioned that WPN stores will be allowed to share other store information via the feature in the future.
