Lost Ruins of Arnak Overview
In Lost Ruins of Arnak, you’re the leader of an expedition, exploring an uncharted, unmapped, and uninhabited island. Or so you thought. Hints of an ancient civilization are found, and players are on a mission to learn all of the island’s secrets and history. But an unmapped ancient jungle could be full of any number of dangers.
Originally released in 2020, Lost Ruins of Arnak has been noted as a consistently critically and player acclaimed game. In 2020 alone, it was nominated for nine board game awards and won three of them. More recently, the game has released a few expansions for even more adventures. Including the Expedition Leaders expansion and The Mission Expedition expansion.
The game uses a mix of different mechanics, including deck building, resource management, discovery, and strategy. Each turn, players can take just one action, so they’ll need to be picky and thoughtful in how they choose to further their adventure and how it will help set their future moves up.
But this can be a complex equation, when players will have workers, equipment, and supplies to organize, while mitigating their wealth, and trying to get as deep into the jungle and its secrets as possible.
How To Play Lost Ruins of Arnak
The objective of Lost Ruins of Arnak is to explore the uncharted island of Arnak and discover as much as possible about the secret, mysterious, and long-gone civilization that once lived there. Through exploration of the island, archeology, and encounters with the guardians of these ancient sights, players will piece together more and more information about the Arnak ruins.
Ideally, this is enough to piece together a coherent enough body of research that it could lead to the discovery of the Lost Temple. Players’ various accomplishments are each worth points, and at the end of the game, the expedition with the most points will be declared the winner.
Games are played in five rounds, each consisting of five actions. First, players will draw cards from their deck until they have a hand of five cards. Then they will take turns making main and free actions. Players are limited to one main action per turn, but can take unlimited free actions. Some main actions include things like digging or discovering a new site, overcoming a guardian, buying or playing a card, or doing research. Free actions are indicated by the cards in the player’s hand. Here, players may also pass to indicate that they are done making moves for the remainder of the round.
After players have completed all of their moves, they will begin set-up for the next round. Here cards are returned and shuffled, player markers are moved across the board, and the moon staff is moved to indicate the passage of time.
At the end of five rounds, players will tally up their points, and determine who had the highest number of successful expeditions, encounters, and discoveries.
Should I Buy This Game?
This game looks like it’s going to be a lot. There are lots of different components and playstyles as well as symbols, resources, and workers to keep track of. And as a scored strategy game, you’re going to have to keep track of all of it. But that doesn’t take away from this being a very enjoyable and engaging game. The exploration and discovery is genuinely fun. And on top of that, the artwork is beautiful.
If that sounds like your kind of game, then not only is there an entire island for you to explore and research, but multiple expansions to give you almost endless opportunities for archeological breakthroughs.
And you can explore ven more with these expansions that add unique leader playerboards, abilities, and alternative research tracks, plus new assistants, items, guardians, and artifacts.
