Call of Cthulhu’s newest book, Campfire Tales: Scouts Against Cthulhu, lets you take on horrors from beyond the stars AND summer camp.
Chaosium has a new sourcebook out now that delves into another side of Call of Cthulhu. In Campfire Tales: Scouts Against Cthulhu, you’ll play investigators, sure, but you’ll be playing investigators with a curfew and a bedtime and, presumably, homework to contend with alongside the horrors from beyond the shores of reality.
I’m all for it. You get to recreate the feeling of a misspent youth, of long summer nights and getting into danger that seems to loom alongside the dangers and all-too-scary world of adulthood. There’s a reason that “kids on bikes” films resonate even to modern audiences. But what lies in wait in Campfire Tales?
Campfire Tales: Scouts Against Cthulhu – Available Now
What I love about this is that it’s not just a new vibe, but a new setting. Taking place in the 1920s, so you can have those old-timey scout hats (which I’m pretty sure was probably the first thing the designers thought of, and the rest fell into place after). You will explore the setting of Westhaven and its environs as part of a campaign designed to teach you what kinds of scrapes a troop of scout-investigators might get up to.
It’s a great way to envision a character that might one day become an occult investigator in, say, the 1940s, but back before they’d ever been to Miskatonic University, or whatever. Especially since the book will have plenty of rules for creating a young investigator character.
“Call of Cthulhu: Campfire Tales enables players to take on the role of scout-investigators as they come face-to-face with dangers from beyond this world.
The book contains new rules for creating young investigators, including new skills and special systems for using scout Merit Badges and ADversity. Also included are rules for taking your scout-investigators to adulthood, they are ready to progress on to other Call of Cthulhu campaigns as fully fledged investigators!”
Personally, I love the idea. I mean, imagine a perfect long-running campaign where you play as a troop of scouts who get embroiled in some kind of dangerous scenario. Maybe they unearth an ancient artifact and seemingly dealing with the dangers that arise from it (while also coming of age and learning about life, and who you are). And then, you pick up with a full-on CoC campaign that starts off with characters slowly being pulled back into the world of the occult. Especially when some old, familiar dangers start to turn up again…
Of course, your own dream campaign might look a little different. But, this new sourcebook is sure to offer you a fun way to either set up a prologue or interlude to a Call of Cthulhu campaign. It might make for an amazing one-shot (or short campaign) with some Stranger Things (the good seasons) type vibes to it.
