Well the Armoured Guantlet Rules are bit of a surprise throwback for Warhammer 40,000. What exactly are these for?

Within the Armageddon: The Return of Yarrick, we’re getting a new game-type as well as Campaign structure. The Armoured Gauntlet is focusing on Tanks and Monsters to make them the Aces they are. I’m honestly still wrapping my head around these rules and what exactly these are for. From the looks of it these are an additional ruleset you can use in your games of 40k. At least on the Narrative side of things. But this is a rare case where I’m not sure I want to play with a 40k expansion.

The Armoured Gauntlet Rules

For the Armoured Gauntlet a new type of unit keyword is being added. It’s Spearhead. No, it’s not a mission type of different game mode this time around. Anyhow, this keyword is given to any vehicle or monster with more than 10 wounds. Oh and they can’t be an aircraft, fortification, or have the Hover ability. So what does it do? Well, it make them a bit of a pain to deal with to be brutally honest.

Spearhead units in Armoured Gauntlet games are a fair bit tougher than the average metal box, so when they suffer their last unsaved Wound, they roll on a new(ish) table to see what happens instead of simply dying. Certain rules can load them up with Damage Tokens too, which add to the roll and so increase the likelihood of exploding in a spectacular fireball.

And oh God, No. NO. NOOOOOOO!!!!! Sorry, I’m having flash backs to Mech Eldar days. I know GW was joking about 40k veterans making “wistful looks into the middle distance at the mention of vehicle damage tables.” That’s not a wistful look. That’s a 1000-yard stare into the abyss. No thanks. I don’t want to go back to these. I want to drop a vehicle to 0 wounds and I want it to go away. Not have to take a check because I rolled a 1. No. Just no. /rantover

ANYHOW, I’ll try to just go over the rest of these rules. The various factions also have their own charts for damage based on the units. So everyone can get in on the action in their own way. You’ll also be able to make some of these Spearhead units veterans as well. There’s also a new subset of missions specifically for these rules as well.

Naturally, you’ll need a suitable arena to try out all of these new rules and fancy upgrades, and the Armoured Gauntlet book contains 12 missions for just that occasion. Nine give you balanced objectives and mission rules for when you both bring along armies full of SPEARHEAD models, while the last three Challenge missions are unique scenarios designed as exhilarating asymmetrical showdowns for when one side has significantly more big guys than the other.

There’s also an entire campaign structure to go along with this game mode. It’s actually (somewhat) standard Campaign Tree that we’ve seen GW do before.

It’s a little hard to parse without the context of all the missions but looking it over you can get a rough idea of how things will flow. I am curious about the rest of these rules but I’m still having flashbacks to the damage table. And they aren’t good. Sorry GW, I might have to sit this one out. I’ll play with the other stuff in the Armageddon set but I don’t think I can take another encounter with unkillable Falcons again.

Can’t destroy this.

I hope this isn’t a preview for 11th edition vehicle rules…
