Remember Eric Flint’s 1632 alt history novels? Now they’re back, in GURPS form – or at least they will be soon in GURPS: Ring of Fire.

If you’ve never beheld the wonder that is a GURPS sourcebook, buckle up. They are some of the most exhaustively researched and written sourcebooks because GURPS, being the “generic” universal roleplaying system, relies heavily on its splatbooks to flavor the soup. And that means that any GURPS book is bound to be a letter of love to whatever it’s based on. It’s why Steve Jackson’s office got raided by the FBI that one time.

Well, now GURPS is back with a new sourcebook, this time inspired by Eric Flint’s Ring of Fire series that sees residents of the small town of Grantsville, West Virginia, transported back in time to 1632 when Germany was embroiled in the Thirty Years’ War. And it’s fitting for GURPS, because the Ring of Fire series is one of the most exhaustively researched and written alt-history settings. Hope you like your books crunchy.

GURPS: Ring of Fire – Coming Soon To BackerKit

Of course, before the book can come out it has to go through Crowdfunding. That’s just how it goes, but that just means that by this point, it’s well underway and you won’t have super long to wait. SJG tends to fulfil its crowdfunders with smooth regularity.

Now of course, you’ll just have to figure out how to get your friends into GURPS. But if you were already playing GURPS, that’s probably your life’s mission in general. GURPS players are like the Linux-users of the ttrpg world, always out there trying to convince people that their system is the best one (and they might be right but that doesn’t really matter because you take a look and it’s a little bit daunting).

At any rate, here’s a look at the announcement, which has all the current details about the upcoming project:

GURPS Ring of Fire is based on 1632 – also known as Ring of Fire – an alternate history story that takes place over a series of 30+ books and anthologies. It’s the largest alt-history setting ever written! The series was created and spearheaded by Eric Flint, and the tale has now been adapted into a GURPS supplement. Steve Jackson Games collaborated with Baen Books on the project, and it features contributions from several writers of the series – Griffin Barber, Charles E. Gannon, Walter H. Hunt, and Robert E. Waters. Award-winning fan-favorite GURPS author William H. Stoddard edited and adapted the series to be compatible with GURPS Fourth Edition. The cover art was created by Larry Elmore.

In the RPG, players are told about the Ring of Fire event and how the world changed because of it. It includes information on scores of characters and nine famous organizations from the book series, giving players and GMs a starting point for planning campaigns and adventures. They’ll build their characters using the GURPS system. Weapons, important equipment, and vehicles are described, and they can be copied or reinvented. Thorough timelines give players a way to add extra flavor and details. Maps add visual elements.

This is the kind of thing that you probably know is for you upon first glance. You’re either a fan of GURPS or Ring of Fire or just alt history in general. And if you aren’t in that specific niche – well there’s still a chance it might be what you’re after; everyone has a first brush with their kinks somewhere. And RPGs are no different.

Just remember, if you are going to fall into the Ring of Fire, try not to go down, down, down while the flames go higher!
