This massive LEGO Macross VF-1S Valkyrie includes thousands of pieces and fully transforms from mech to fighter.

Macross (/Robotech, I’m not going to get into that mess here) is one of the most classic space opera mecha anime out there. Along with Gundam, the two are really the pillars of the military space mecha genre. These are classic shows packed with great action and tons of battles, ships, fighters, mechas, and things that blur the line between them.

One of the most iconic of all mecha is Macross’ VF-1 Valkyrie. Also known as a Veritech (though this is a classification of the type of Mecha, and not the name of a specific one), these are the main fighters/mechs piloted by the heroes in the series. And I say fighter/mech, because they are both.

Veritechs are the ultimate in transforming battle mechs, starting off as a fighter, and being able to transform to a full-on mech, with an in-between stage; they can fight just for fun. Throughout the series, you also get various variations, such as the VF-1S, and later, whole new models.

LEGO Macross VF-1S Valkyrie

Builder Haoyu Guo / G_phy has brought to LEGO a really amazing build of a Macross VF-1S Valkyrie. G_phy is an amazing Chinese builder who won LEGO Masters China in 2021. Their work seems to focus more on smaller/mid-range builds than huge ones. However, they are masters of detail, and their builds often have a lot of complex moving parts. You can see that on full display with the VF-1S build. You can find more of G_phy’s work here.

LEGO Macross VF-1S Valkyrie

The specific VF-1 Valkyrie depicted here is a VF-1S version. While it’s easily confused with the most famous VF-1S, that flown by Skull Squadron Leader Roy Focker, this is actually a different one. The one depicted here is actually Hikaru Ichijo’s from the movie Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? As opposed to the VF-1, the VF-1S has a heavier load out, and this one has a unique color scheme.

The build here is pretty lore accurate and is done in Technic figure scale, as shown by the 4105224 figure. It’s also built almost entirely out of Technic parts, making it look a bit different from some of the other LEGO MOCs you might see. It’s a great-looking and cool build and would make a perfect display piece. However, what really sets this one apart is its ability to transform. True to the Veritech technology, this build can go from Mecha to Fighter mode and in between.

Get Your Own LEGO Mech

Now, sadly LEGO doesn’t officially sell Veritech  sets (yet – get on that, LEGO!), but they do actually have a number of pretty cool mechs you can get if you want to start a collection. Most of them come from the Ninjago theme and have some cool designs. These are a great way to get started building LEGO mechs and maybe experiment building something of your own.

The Fire Knight Mech is a pretty cool looking one – and there are others in the line, all the better to battle with!

  • 996 pieces
  • 2 minifigs
  • 10.2 in. (26 cm) tall when posed on the display stand with its spear

Abe is that rare thing, an Austin local born and raised here. Though he keeps on moving around, DC, Japan, ETC., he always seems to find his way back eventually. Abe has decades of experience with a wide range of tabletop and RPG games, from historicals, to Star Wars to D&D and 40K. He has been contributing to BOLS since almost the start, back when he worked at and then owned a local gaming store. He used to be big into the competitive Warhammer tournament scene but age has mellowed him and he now appreciates a good casual match. He currently covers Warhammer: The Old World, as well as all things Star Wars, with occasional dabbling in other topics. Abe mourned over loss of WFB for its entire hiatus, but has been reborn like a gaming phoenix with Warhammer: The Old World.
