The Imperial Special Forces are ready to move behind enemy lines in Star Wars: Legion. Let’s take a look at their new kit.

When I first saw the miniature for the Imperial Special Forces my initial thought was “hey, aren’t those TIE Pilots? But after getting a review box of them from Atomic Mass Games I figured I should at least figure out what’s going on with this unit. So let’s give them a shot to see what’s in their box!

I’m pretty sure those are the exact same helmets TIE Pilots wear…just sayin.

Imperial Special Forces Unboxed

For the record, the Imperial Special Forces aren’t the same as TIE Pilots (although I bet quite a few of them could pilot a TIE in a pinch). They wore similar uniforms with the all-black uniforms and masks/helmets. Some of those even came with their own rebreathers (note the tubing on the artwork). But that’s something the miniature don’t have. There’s also other art work of the same unit without tubing connecting their helmets to their gear on their chests. Personally, my only real interactions with the Imperial Special Forces is me blasting them in video games. Which is why I was confused about them in the first place.

Anyhow, I’m not here to talk about their history or their exploits. Let’s take a look inside the box!

Once again, we’ve got all the components in their own bags from AMG. The Sprues, Bases, and Cards/Tokens are all there as well as the flyer with a link to their assembly guide. I’ll be honest, this unit is really easy to build if you just keep an eye out for the labeled bits while assembling them. More on that below.

Card-wise we get two unit options as well as various upgrades. Both Del Meeko and Gideon Hask are options for this unit and they are the ones without their helmets on.

The sprues themselves are fairly easy to navigate. They aren’t super cluttered and you get two different sprues for the unit. In total you can build seven miniatures. And if you don’t want to build the named upgrades, there are helmet swaps for their heads. Same with the weapon upgrades. You can basically build all seven models as Special Forces with Helmets and basic blasters.

Imperial Special Forces Up Close

As far as the miniatures themselves, this was a really easy build. No complaints from me on that front! If you’ve assembled any other SWL minis these should be on par/slightly easier to build as they go together in very obvious ways.

Again, just follow the instructions or just clip out all the bits with the same label (like “A1” and “A2” etc.) and you’ll be fine. Also, dry fitting is your friend.

The only real issue I had was lining up the off-hand to the weapon. But I’ve built enough miniature in my day to know how to work quick before the glue sets and position the arms/hand/gun correctly.  If it’s your first time building miniature that might be the only real source of issues. Oh and cleaning them. Be sure to get all the burrs. The models have a tolerance for error but not much.

One other thing I want to mention is that the heads on these guys seemed a little …off. Maybe it’s the scale or the amount of detail AMG put into these heads but the helmets seemed just slightly too large and both Hask and Meeko’s heads seem to be a little larger, too. Maybe it’s just a proportion thing. I’m not sure. I haven’t really noticed that same issue for the majority of the other Star Wars: Legion sculpts but I’m going to be on the look out for it now.

In any case, this unit out now and in stores. So snag your copy and field your own Special Forces unit for the Galactic Empire!

Star Wars: Legion – Imperial Special Forces $39.99

This expansion adds seven Imperial Special Forces miniatures to your collection—enough for two distinct units—along with six Upgrade Cards that allow players to kit them out for battle. In addition to the standard Special Forces troopers, you can also assemble Inferno Squad members Gideon Hask and Del Meeko miniatures with or without their signature helmets.
