You can now play a Helldiver in Baldur’s Gate 3. Yeah, I know, I’m starting a new playthrough too. Here’s what you need to know.
If you aren’t playing Baldur’s Gate 3 with mods, you are missing out, my friend. There’s a reason that even console players can experience the true joy of modding Baldur’s Gate 3 – and that’s because Larian loves its playerbase. They understand that you gotta open up the hood and put Master Chief in the game sometimes. Or, in this case, a mod that lets you play as a Helldiver in Baldur’s Gate 3.
And it’s not just a cosmetic mod, either. This is a full-on class mod, adding FOUR NEW SUBCLASSES as well as 37 stratagems, perks, passive abilities, and a whole lot more. If you want to bring Managed Democracy to bear against the Absolute (and I want to so bad that as I’m writing this article, the mod is installing so I can start a new playthrough, and it’s really a race to see what finishes first, me writing or the mod installing), you can. Let’s check it out.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Helldiver Mod – Calling In An Orbital
The whole thing is the brainchild of modder LoneRainger, who is clearly a fan of both games. Because how else could anyone so perfectly capture the feeling of both games? It’s clear from the detail in the mod just how many hourse LoneRainger must have spent on Malevelon Creek.
Take the four new subclasses, for instance. Each one is named after a popular War Bond. There’s the Siege Breaker, which is all about heavy ordnance and staggering enemies so they can’t kill you. The Python Commando is all about frontline combat. If you want stealth, the Redacted Regiment subclass is for you. Or bring the twin behavior controlling powers of gas and electricity to bear against your enemies with Chemical Agent.
But, as anyone who plays Helldivers 2 knows, the real main character is the orbital bombardment made available to you by your Super Destroyer. And that shows up in the mod, with 37 different Stratagems appearing as custom spells.
For instance, you can call in a Support Weapon (or backpack item) like the recoilless rifle, or the arc thrower or the jet pack. Or to strike at enemies far away you can call down an orbital rail cannon strike, gatling barrage, or even send in Eagle-1 equipped with my beloved 500kg bomb.
Just imagine the look on Gortash’s face when you call down a cluster bomb run right in the middle of his stupid party. Or wiping the smug smirk off of Raphael’s face with 120mm high explosive rounds fired in a spreading pattern from low orbit.
And that’s before we even get into dealing with the new stims and grenades and other items added into the game. Or mentioning the Sentry Stratagems, which I tend not to because usually I end up friendly-firing myself with the autocannon sentry. But hey, maybe it’ll work out in Baldur’s Gate 3.
