Saruman looms large over two new supplements coming soon for The One Ring and Lord of the Rings Roleplaying (5E).
Before the treachery of Isengard, Saruman was considered the wisest of the order of the Istari. But an encounter with the Palantir changed him. And boy, don’t get me started on how Palantir just sort of corrupts everything.
By comparison, it makes the Palantir (pronounced way differently) of The Lord of the Rings seem downright approachable. It’s just an evil artifact that acts as a seeing and communication device for the will of Sauron. It’s not even pretending to be something useful or helpful.
Either way, Saruman is at the heart of two new supplements from Free League for both of the LOTRPGs. Let’s check ’em out.
Hands of the White Wizard & Trials of Saruman
So if you’re familiar at all with Free Leagues LotR books, you know they have two different versions. The first, The One Ring is a bespoke RPG that has its own different rules for making characters going on journeys, exploring fellowship and so on. Then there’s Lord of the Rings Roleplaying which uses the D&D 5E ruleset and some pretty extensive customization to capture that feeling with d20s involved.
Free League has a habit of releasing the same supplement for either version, that way whatever you’re playing, you don’t miss out on the newest releases. In this case, there’s Hands of the White Wizard for The One Ring, and Trials of Saruman for Lord of the Rings Roleplaying.
Both supplements feature Isengard and its machinations:
“Set between the year 2965 of the Third Age and the opening moves of the War of the Ring, Hands of the White Wizard and Trials of Saruman invite players to serve or watch Saruman the White before the treachery of Isengard begins.
AdvertisementAcross six adventures players will journey into Isengard and decide whether Saruman’s doom is already written or whether they can still change his fate and save the White Wizard from corruption.”
To that end, both of these are campaigns split up into six different adventures. You can follow along with Saruman before his fall into darkness, and decide whether you’re working with him or keeping tabs on him as the pride of the wizard starts to invite ruin.
Both of these books will be available soon!
