That’s right, not one, but two new Elric of Melnibone RPGs are in the works. One from Goodman Games and one from Free League.
Step right up Stormbringer fans. It’s two RPGs for the price of… well, two… because they’re being developed separately by two different publishers. But still, that’s twice the options for playing out your cursed sword and dark sorcery fantasies set in Michael Moorcock’s world of Law and Chaos. Fun times abound.
What an interesting time to be alive, especially if you’re a Moorcock fan. Because there are two different RPGs being developed by two wildly different publishers, both based on the works and world of Elric of Melnibone. Free League is behind one, while Goodman Games shepherds the other. We’re going to take a look at both!
Goodman Games’ ‘The Classic Era of Elric’ – Dark Dungeons Await
First up, Goodman Games announced earlier this week The Classic Era of Elric, the fruits of a new licensing deal to bring to life the world of Elric of Melnibone. Goodman Games, whom you might know from Dungeon Crawl Classics or from reimagining classic 1st edition modules into 5th Edition D&D, is going in the direction you’d expect it to.
That is, the Goodman Games take on Elric will be a new line of sourcebooks and adventures and all the trimmings designed to work with DCC or 5th Edition D&D, slated to come to crowdfunding in 2027.
That means dungeon crawls, crunchy combats, and if you’re doing it in true DCC fashion, a whole lot of cannon fodder left absolutely wrecked as you finally get a character to level 1 and greatness beyond. If you want a “D&D Type” experience, this is the one you’ll want to check out. You can follow the pre-launch page for the Kickstarter via a link at the end of this article.
Free League’s ‘Legends of Stormbringer RPG’
Meanwhile, Free League has its own Elric-based-offering in the form of its newly announced Legends of Stormbringer RPG. This too is an officially licensed RPG, and is set for release in 2027. Only this one is powered by Dragonbane, Free League’s award-winning fantasy RPG that’s surprisingly full of ducks and duck-focused fantasy things.
“Legends of Stormbringer will carry you into the Young Kingdoms – a world of dying empires, warring gods, and doomed heroes – and bring Moorcock’s richly imagined setting to the tabletop using rules mechanics based on our award-winning Dragonbane RPG. The game will feature the same accessible, dynamic, and deadly approach that has made Dragonbane one of our most celebrated titles.”

And similarly, Free League has plans to crowdfund their upcoming project. Again, you can find a link to learn more and be notified down there at the end of the articles.
But let it henceforth be known: 2027 will be the Year of Two Elrics!
