Image Comics is getting into the TTRPG business. The comics publisher will release a new graphic novel/5E campaign book titled The Swords of the Wintersea, with the first book coming out in April 2025. The graphic novel is written by Matt Hawkins (the president of Image imprint Top Cow) and illustrated by Pat Boutin and Stéphane Paitreau. The comic is based off of Hawkins’ home D&D campaign (which has lasted 40 years) and will include a playable 5E open-source campaign including maps.

Comics and tabletop RPGs have had many intersections over the years, with TSR notably publishing the Marvel Super Heroes RPG, Palladium publishing (and republishing) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness and Games Workshop publishing Judge Dredd: The Role-Playing Game. While all of these were licensed RPGs, comics publishers have more recently dabbled in RPG publications of their own. Marvel is self-publishing a Marvel Multiverse RPG, while DC recently published a 5E campaign setting supplement based on The Last God.

The Swords of the Wintersea: Immortality Book 1 will be released in April 2025 and will cost $16.99. You can read a description of the graphic novel below:

The Island Nations of Arlynn were at war for millennia until the humans of Wintersea used their Naval strength to dominate the elves, dwarves, and orcs and declared all Gods except theirs to be fake. They use half-humans and converts to spy on the other races. Elven Monk Omylia and Half-Elf Ranger Vander were unwillingly conscripted to join a quest to find the lost gems of the crown of Amman-Tha, control of which would permanently cement the humans as the dominant force. The undead conspiracy they uncover will change everything!
