Halloween might have come and gone, but these new adversaries from Daggerheart are just as fearsome any day of the year.
Critical Role’s upcoming fantasy RPG, Daggerheart is speeding its way towards a Spring 2025 launch. Today, we get a look at four fearsome foes (or frenemies) that you might find lurking within the shadows.
Though these creatures are monstrous, their role in the game is specifically as “Adversary”. That term has a special meaning in the game, as Shaun Ellis, lead concept artist for Daggerheart, explained alongside the accompanying artwork. These may be direct antagonists, or they may be foils, but whatever their purpose, these four are prime examples of what awaits in the Daggerheart launch!

But what is an Adversary? These feel like foes with a little more narrative weight. As Ellis puts it:
“Adversaries take on many appearances and servean y numer of roles in a narrative, but most often they exist as antagnists of many kinds: a deceitful individual, a frightening monstrosity, a creature of violent instinct, or even something shrouded in an ominous mystery, and so on.
Their role is a supporting one that is meant to inspire characters to become a hero, face their fears, confront horrors, or even fall from grace.”

On To The Monsters
First up the Patchwork Zombie Hulk. This “towering gestalt of corpses moving as one” is a big, beefy undead bruiser. As you might gather just from looking at it, it’s tough. But it can also incorporate the dead into its form. So be careful when taking one of these on, lest you join them.
This tall glass of water is an Oracle of Doom. Described as an “incarnation of fate” the Oracle has an ill-fated (pun intended) curse. It can only see bad outcomes. And those who hear the Oracle’s proclamatins may become doomed to carry them out.
The Head Vampire, on the other hand, is a much more relatable foe. It’s a big scary vampire. Hates garlic and stakes, loves the children of the night and whatever music they make.
Finally the Demon of Wrath. This big, hulking demon has “boulder-sized fists” and a temperament that disposes it to smashing all in its path. It will absolutely wreck any who get in its way. But heroes fighting from afar should take heed – this demon can set its opponents’ blood to boil.
You can find these fearsome foes and more in Daggerheart, launching Spring 2025!
