Exciting news today as Cubicle 7 announces a new 5th Edition for its Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. Get ready for WFRP 5E.

Fun times ahead for people trying to abbreviate editions, as yet another venerable ttrpg gets ready for a 5th Edition. This means, now, when you mention 5E, you might refer to D&D, Vampire the Masquerade, and now Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. Though really, if you say 5E you mean D&D. Which makes it hard to say that Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay is getting a 5th Edition because you can’t just abbreviate it WFRP 5E or even Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 5E because that carries with it the unintended implication of saying it’s compatible with D&D. Even though it’s not.

There’re many differences between D&D and WFRP that illustrate the flexibility and power of rpgs. And I’m super excited for the new edition, even if it’s tricky to write about without making people think that D&D and Warhammer are getting together, which again, they aren’t.

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 5th Edition

The news comes as part of a celebration of 40 years of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. In a post on Cubicle 7’s blog, designers Dominic McDowall and Dave Allen talk about plans for the new edition.

“The 40th Anniversary of WFRP is a fantastic time to celebrate the incredible journey and impact of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. We’ve got lots of plans, starting with a new edition of the rules. I can’t quite believe it’s been over eight years since I sat down with a blank page in front of me and started designing Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Fourth Edition!”

And the new, 5th Edition Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay looks to keep what made the previous editions exciting. The designers take pains to point out that they wanr to keep the “satisfying level of detail people love” intact. And that’s music to my ears, because to me WFRP is gritty and granular with its character options. But also a big part of the new edition’s design is trying to make the game both flow better, and, in true WFRP fashion, get “a little more deadly.”

Your character dying an ignominious death at the hands of Chaos Cultists who got lucky is just part of the experience. The Old World is a dangerous place, and it is unkind to heroes. So I’m glad to see that they want it to feel more dangerous, not less.

Dave Allen had a little more to day with regards to the specifics of the changes”

“Talents now apply to specific areas and do that one thing well, avoiding the problem of overlapping bonuses. We’ve merged Resilience and Resolve into Fate and Fortune to reduce tracking those resources. The magic system takes cues from Winds of Magic and integrates that material more tightly into the core rules.”

But by and large, this all sounds like what you’d hope for from a new edition of a classic RPG. And this alongside a host of other new products, including a campaign centered around a Dark Elf Black Ark on a collision course with Marienburg.

So keep your eyes peeled and your ears flayed, I guess, more news is likely to follow.

A new edition means new ways to die in the Old World!
