Blood Bowl is getting a new edition very soon and Games Workshop is teasing the upcoming changes for the new edition.

There’s a new edition of Blood Bowl on the way and this time around GW is making some nice sounding changes. The “Third Season Edition” of Blood Bowl looks to clean-up some of the confusion and make the game a bit more manageable. We already saw the new tokens on the way but now we’re getting a few of the rules updates teases as well.

“Developing a new edition of any game provides a whole host of challenges and opportunities to get stuck into. The Blood Bowl rules team spent countless hours analysing the previous edition, breaking it down, looking for what could be improved and reading through all the feedback from you, the avid Blood Bowl fanbase, to ensure that this new season would be in line with what fans wanted.”

Blood Bowl Season Three Edition

I’m not going to hit every one of the changes coming in the new edition. Go check out the WarCom article for the full rundown. However, I wanted to call out a few rules I’m really looking forward to in this edition.

Secure The Ball Action – This is a new action a player can take. It’s a simple 2+ to pick up a loose ball regardless of the players agility. Now, the catch is that there can’t be any opposing players that aren’t Distracted within 2 Squares of the ball. Big Guys or players with the Unsteady Trait can’t use this action either. So there are a few restrictions on it. That said I think this is a good change. It’s not automatic but being on a 2+ makes sense for a “low pressure” ball recovery.

Passing Changes are also coming. Personally, I rarely saw teams use the passing option for Blood Bowl games. Frankly, they were really risky and only a handful of teams could really make them work anyhow. Well, GW has heard the feedback and is looking to make some changes.

“We’ve taken that on board and removed Wildly Inaccurate Passes and Deflections. This not only makes Passing and Intercepting easier, but it also makes them far simpler to understand. No longer do you need to do a load of additional maths to work out what kind of pass you’ve made, it’s now either Accurate, Inaccurate, or a Fumble – and Intercepting is now just either an Intercept or not. Simple!”

There’s also been a bump in Passing Ability for many players. This doesn’t mean that suddenly every player is a Quarterback, but throwing the ball should at least be viable now. I’m very curious to see how this plays out overall. This could lead to a real “shootout” type of game where players are able to really rack-up the points from passing. I also what to know what type of defensive structures players are going to have to come up with to protect against the pass. Honestly, this could be very exciting for Blood Bowl in general and could really shake things up.

Roster Changes should help players out when it comes to team building and collecting. Games Workshop isn’t just making a pass (no pun intended) on the rules, they are also going over the rosters in what they are saying could be the biggest overall change.

“The first thing to note is that the number of positionals on a roster will now match what is in the team box, meaning you should never have to buy a second box just to get more Blitzers/Runners etc. “

I don’t know about you, but that’s actually HUGE news for players. If you want to play a team all you should need is now a single box. It’s kind of silly (or if you’re more cynical, it’s downright predatory pricing behavior) to need to buy two boxes (or more) to get all the actual positions you might need. This change just makes sense and should make trying out other teams just as easy.

Again, there are more updates on the way. These are just the ones that really stood out to me. Cleaner and simpler rules, viable passing, and easier to collect teams are all wins in my book for Blood Bowl. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to bust out my Gwaka’moli Crater Gators. It might be time to warm-up those lizard with a few scrimmage games in the near future…

I really hope we see a viable passing game for more teams. That’s going to be huge.
