Chris Perkins, longtime designer and Creative Director for Dungeons & Dragons, announced his retirement from WotC.
Chris Perkins, the now-former Creative Director for D&D at Wizards ofth e Coast announced he was stepping down today after 28 years with the company. He leaves D&D on a particularly high note, with both the 50th anniversary and new edition of the game capping off the RPG at the most popular it’s ever been.
Perkins posted the announcement on BlueSky a little over an hour ago, marking a WotC tradition of leaving big decisions for right when people start thinking about what they’re going to do this weekend. But after 28 years, Perkins is excited to once again “enjoy D&D purely as a fan”.
Chris Perkins Retires From WotC
Here’s Perkins’ announcement on BlueSky:
“Today I retire from Wizards of the Coast after 28 years. With D&D’s 50th anniversary wrapping up and the revised rulebooks doing gangbusters, this is the perfect fairytale ending for me. I can’t wait to enjoy D&D purely as a fan again, knowing the game is in good hands. See you in the Feywild!”
Perkins leaves WotC after doing amazing work on D&D, from the start of his careeer at WotC, as the editor of Dungeon magazine, to his role as lead story designer on Curse of Strahd and later Creative Director. He has left an impact on D&D. But I would feel remiss if I didn’t point out that he was also one of the designers on Star Wars: Saga Edition Roleplaying, WotC’s all-too-brief dalliance in the Star Wars universe that heralded many of the best ideas of 4th Edition.
The official D&D social media accounts acknowledge the work Perkins has done, and point out that he mentored the next generation of leaders, stepping up to lead D&D into the next 50 years.
Enjoying games purely as a fan—what a concept!
