Dimension 20’s new 20-episode season, Cloudward, Ho!, evokes the adventure of some of the best animated movies of all time.

Dimension 20 just dropped a trailer for its latest long season. In the trailer for Cloudward, Ho!, D20 reveals a world of airships and adventure, sky pirates, treasure maps, and mysteries to be pursued. It’s the kind of adventure that evokes more pulpy stories in its tone, but in terms of aesthetics and character, there are some real Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Treasure Planet vibes that sink in deep.

‘Cloudward, Ho!’ Promises Wild Adventure

Of course, it’s not just those two films, both of which came out in the space right at the very end of 2D animated films being de rigueur, and 3D animation’s ascent, which is a crying shame. Because to this day, I meet people who don’t know the joy of Milo trying to figure out maps while a crew of rough “expeditioners” led by a villainous Tommy Lee Jones see if he’s tough enough to hang. What I’m saying is you should watch Disney’s Atlantis.

But you should also check out the trailer for Cloudward, Ho! if you’re a fan of Dimension 20. It’s the next “long season,” and this one promises to be absolutely wild. As you can see from the trailer, there’s a lot of visual spectacle in this one. Rick Perry (the miniatures sculptor, not the national embarrassment from Texas) has pulled out seemingly all the stops to deliver a set full of skyships and steam.

You might also be picking up some Bioshock Infinite vibes from this. And that too would not be out of place. There’s a deep-sea diver-looking monster that features in parts of the trailer that could be straight out of Rapture. What’ll be interesting is that this is all done with D&D 5E. I’m curious to see how they’ve hacked it for this season.

In the meantime, there’s so much visual delight to feast your eyes on. Because it’s not just skyships we’ll be seeing. There’s a very deep dive into the ocean as well. And of course, ruins littered with crystals and actual light-up elements.

I am so excited to see how this all comes together. It looks like DM Brennan Lee Mulligan has gotten to really play with the physical/puzzle elements of the genre. Which is something that you never really get to see on a big, actual play show. It’s either theater of the mind or deep tactical combat unless you’re Deborah Ann Woll doing Relics & Rarities.

Cloudward, Ho! premieres June 4th on Dropout.tv, though you can catch the first episode June 11th on YouTube if you don’t have a subscription and want to find out if Dropout is for you or not.

I just want to know what those crystals do!
