In case you missed it, not long ago the folks behind Mausritter released the rules into a Creative Commons-licensed SRD downloadable now.
Mausritter the game of Brave Mice in a Dangerous World took a brave step in our own dangerous world. By which I mean they recently released the rules into a free, Creative Commons-licensed SRD as well as a website that you can either go download or browse around on right now.
And since the rules are in Creative Commons, not only can you go through and grab the rules for free, you can also use the rules in your own creations. It’s a bold move that will benefit the community and keep the game growing.
Mausritter Releases Rules Into Creative Commons SRD
If you’ve never played Mausritter, you absolutely should. It evokes Redwall and Mouse Guard and whatever other books/stories of medieval mice setting out into the wide world to have adventures much larger than they, themselves, are.
And the SRD is comprehensive. You’ll find everything from the “what is a roleplaying game” session we all know and love, to rules for running Mausritter and even making your own Hexcrawl within the system. It is a thorough exploration of the system that gives a full suite of tools to both players and GMs.
Especially since it’s such a rules-lite system. Mice are made up of attributes with a list of starting equipments and backgrounds that suggest who you are and what you do in the world. Making your own Mouse hero is an exercise in reconnecting with the part of you that rooted for Reepicheep in the Chronicles of Narnia.
All of which to say, you can get basically everything you need to play the game for free. Which, to be fair, you always could. There’s always been a free PDF that you can download. But what makes this recent release a little more exciting—especially for creators of all levels—is that the SRD is available as a markdown file that you can download and play with.
And that means a lot of different things—for one, it’s easier to have more digital tools that can make use of a marked up SRD. That’s the big one, honestly. Jump into making your own character builders, and tools. But also it’s extremely well-formatted, so you don’t even have to do that much.
