At Gen Con (and also online) you can snag one of two new starter sets for the Lord of the Rings RPG of your choice: LotR 5E or The One Ring.
Free League has two big new starter sets for its Lord of the Rings RPGs. That’s right, RPGs—there are two that Free League publishes. The One Ring is a bespoke game designed to help you tell tales of journeys and fellowships in Middle-earth. Meanwhile, The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying 5E is, as you might imagine, about exploring Middle-earth using the rules of D&D. Both games have their own starter set going up at Gen Con (and online). But you can pre-order them now, if you like.
Lord of the Rings Starter Sets: Over Hill and Under Hill, LotR 5E Starter Set
First things first, they might technically be two different starter sets, but both have much the same stuff in them. Whether you pick up Over Hill and Under Hill, the One Ring version, or the imaginatively named Lord of the Rings Roleplaying 5E Starter Set, you’ll still find the same starter adventure and more.
Because these are complete experiences meant to draw you into the world of Middle-earth. Set in the time between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, you will head out into the lone-lands of Eriador as a fellowship all your own. There, adventure awaits with new rules and new exciting ways to make your mark on Middle-earth.
You are enjoying a rare, quiet evening at the inn in Bree when a hunter joins your table to share a tale about a dark threat looming over the North Downs. However, you are not merely simple guests at the Prancing Pony – you are members of a Company. It is your self-appointed duty to inquire about the bone-chilling dangers that might emerge from the houseless hills beyond. Are you ready to take the road to adventure?
In either starter set, you’ll find the following:
- Condensed rules for action resolution, combat, councils, and journeys
- The complete adventure Over Hill and Under Hill
- A large, full-color map of Eriador with combat diagram on the back
- Beautifully illustrated cardboard standup figures for Player-heroes and Adversaries
- Five pre-generated and illustrated player heroes
- Custom LotR dice
Either set should take you deep into the lands of Middle-earth and you can find them both at the link below. Or at Gen Con this year, if you happen to be going.
The road goes ever on and on, these starter sets want you to take your first steps!
