Soon, there will be a new Diablo RPG in town, this time coming from Glass Cannon Unplugged with new minis, adventures, and more.
Diablo, with its hellish worlds, action-packed combat, and sprawling skill trees, is getting a new official tabletop RPG sometime in the not too distant future as Glass Cannon Unplugged, makers of the Apex Legends Board Game sets its sight on the world of Diablo IV. This isn’t the first Diablo ttrpg ever. But it has been a while since anyone breached the doors of Sanctuary with pen and paper and dice. Here’s what we know so far.
A New Diablo RPG Dawns, But Will You Get To Horadric Cube?
This is the same Diablo RPG that was first announced back in 2023, originally slated for sometime in 2024. Delays happen in any industry, to be certain. But now there’s a Kickstarter campaign on the horizon, which not only promises a core rulebook (with a bespoke system), but also an adventure anthology—both books written by a team of RPG heavy hitters, including John Harper of Blades in the Dark fame, Joe LeFavi from the Blade Runner RPG, and Shawn Tomkin of Ironsworn.
The core rulebook itself is a chunky one, weighing in at over 300 pages. It is definitely a higher production value book, so I imagine the price tag on this one will be up there. But it’s Diablo, and this looks like it’s aimed at Diablo fans. The Kickstarter copy itself advertises “premium miniatures” as well as “collectible art prints.” All of which signals to me, this is a look good wherever you display it kinda book. Which isn’t inherently bad, but it might help set your expectations about backing it.
I’m excited to see the new rules system. Again, developed by a team of heavies, it promises a “custom d6 dice pool system.” And one suited to “cinematic action” that jumps you right into the thick of it. What does that mean? Well, here’s what the Kickstarter landing page says:
“Hack & slash through endless mobs in fast-paced, tactical combat where story, stats, and synergies hold sway. No inexperienced and squishy 1st levels here. Begin your adventure fully equipped as a seasoned hero ready to live the epic-level dream of TTRPGs from session zero. Takeup the mantle as classic classes like Barbarians, Druids, Necromancers, Rogues, and Sorcerers as you harness aesome powers, plunge into dungeons, and revel in legendary gear, gold, and glory.”
Gear gold and glory is the Diablo experience. It’ll be interesting to see how this RPG delivers on the hack and slash meat of Diablo, while also keeping the pace fast and furious. But language like “legendary gear” evokes the color-coded magic item ladders of Diablo that lead you to becoming an unstoppable champion who rips through the lords of hell like they were nothing.
Especially everything about starting at the “epic-level dream of TTRPGs”—that puts me in mind of Diablo IV‘s seasons. Where you don’t start over at level 1 you just get better and better gear to clear through dungeons faster and faster. I’m curious to see how they translate the challenge of Diablo into the narrative of a tabletop RPG. Because the people who play Diablo don’t stick around for the story, they do it for the slaughter. We’ll find out soon, though! You can learn more at the link below.
Stay a while, and listen!
