Games Workshop is showcasing the new rules for the two Death Spearheads coming to pre-order this weekend. It’s ghost and ghoulies time!

There are two new Spearhead boxes coming to pre-order this weekend. We’ve got one for the Nighthaunt and one for the Flesh-eater Courts. We already tackled them for our pricing breakdowns. Now it’s time to get a look at what their rules will be on the tabletop.

“The forces of Death are mustering – reinforcements approach for the vengeful gheists of the Nighthaunt and the noble knights of the Flesh-eater Courts. Alongside new battletomes, new faction mechanics, and new heroes, they’re also getting new Spearheads.”

Flesh-eater Courts Spearhead Rules

The Charnel Watch is the Spearhead for the Flesh-eater Courts. It consists of an Abhorrant Gorewarden, three Crypt Horrors, three Crypt Flayers, and a unit of the Royal Beastflayers warband. This Spearhead does lean into the army mechanics of the Flesh-eater Courts with their own version of the Delusions and Madness ability.

“Just like when you play the full army, you will be able to pick between Delusions in the first battle round, while in subsequent rounds you’ll be rolling a dice. On 1-3 the mania will fracture and shift, on a 4+ you must stick with your existing belief.”

The units in the Spearhead also have access to their own Delusions to choose from. Above are just two examples. There are also additional regimental Delusions to choose. Delusion of the Hunter adds one to your wound rolls for combat attacks that aren’t contesting objectives. The other option is the Delusion of the Sentinel which adds one to ward rolls for units that are contesting objectives. I like this as it gives you some solid offensive/defensive options.

Additionally, as with other Spearheads, the Charnel Watch also has access to regiment abilities and enhancements. You’ll have a few options to choose from. Unfortunately, we don’t have any previews for those so you’ll have to wait for release to find out.

Nighthaunt Spearhead Rules

The Cursed Shacklehorde consists of a Spirit Torment with attending Chainghasts. This is followed up with two Dreadblade Harrows, and sets of 10 Bladegheist Revenants and 10 Dreadscythe Harridans. That’s a whole lot of cutting and slashing from these gnarly ghosts. These ghosts still benefit from the army wide Ethereal rule, too.

The Spearhead also has access to the Spectral Procession which allows you to hold back a unit of five Bladegheist and five Dreadscythes in reserve. Then they can make a dramatic arrival thanks to their Cackling Arrival ability.

Discorporate is another ability for the army that grants a unit a +1 to their save rolls. They also have access to the Mounting Dread army rule, too. Although it has been slightly modified for Spearhead.

“The Mounting Dread your force exudes obliges enemy units to subtract the number of the battle round from their control score while in combat – though you’ll need to score a 2+ at the end of the turn to trigger the terror.”

Again, there will be regimental options for abilities and enhancements but we don’t have previews to share for those.

Both of these Spearheads are up for pre-order this weekend from Games Workshop.
