Games Workshop is showing off that we’re getting a new Marneus Calgar Miniature and I’m left wondering one question: “…but why?”
When I first saw the news yesterday about the new Marneus Calgar Miniature I was left scratching my head. Wait…didn’t we already get a Primaris version of him? There was a bunch of lore around that update, too. So that’s kind of why this new miniature feels kind of out of the (ultramarine) blue. So what’s up with the new Calgar?
“Marneus Calgar is a legendary hero who takes every opportunity to strike at the enemies of the Imperium with righteous fury. He’s so eager to defend Ultramar, some of you may have recently seen him stepping into the breach.”
Marneus Calgar Back In Terminator Armor
Okay, if you couldn’t tell what’s new, don’t feel too bad. It took me a moment to figure out what was changed, too. It’s that he’s now (back) in Terminator Armor. Specifically the Armour of Antilochus — which is technically his old suit of Terminator Armor. Here’s the previous/current armor he’s in:
Looking at this miniature I’m thinking “yeah, it’s Gravis Armor but it looks cool. It’s not that old, right?” Yeah…this is from 2018. Which was…seven years ago. Anyone else feeling old now?
Anyhow, Calgar isn’t the only one getting a slight glow up. That Honor Guard that comes with his current box? They are also getting new miniatures — and there’s more of them.
New Victrix Honour Guard Miniatures
“This new unit contains three Honour Guard with a bounty of interchangeable options including greaves, helmets, and left arm options wielding master-crafted bolt carbines. One miniature can be built as a Chapter Champion, and another as a Chapter Ancient carrying the Banner of Macragge.”
If you’re looking at this and feeling a hint of nostalgia that’s kind of the point. This is a direct call back to a previous version of Calgar and Co. as well. Right down to the dual sword wielding champion with the gold helmet…
Is it all starting to make sense now? To me this does start to answer my initial question/reaction of “…but why?” Aside from the real reason of “because money” it’s because Calgar’s Primaris update was from 2018 and had him in Gravis Armor. Now he’s getting a refresh, along with his Honor Guard and he’s in Terminator Armor. So yeah, I think we’re about to have two versions of him again (maybe?) as options for the Ultramarines.
To be fair, it’s not a bad take on him. And I think the rescaling of the Terminators at the start of the current edition might also be a reason for the update. When the change was made that “oh yeah, Primaris can totally be in Terminator Armor, too” it kind of makes sense that this would happen. I do wonder what’s going to happen with the Gravis armor folks. I’ll guess we’ll have to wait and see on that front.

Cato Sicarius, Captain of the Victrix Honour Guard
Another classic Ultramarine is getting an update, too. Cato Sicarius is back and has become the newly appointed Captain of the Victrix Honour Guard. So, there’s that, too!
I’m glad to see Cato back but I don’t really have much to say about this one. I do wonder what the plan is for the Victrix Honour Guard unit plus Cato and Calgar. Are we about to see a Super Friends style combo unit again? Or maybe it’s just going to be bodyguards all around? I really hope it’s not a Super Friends team-up…
What do you think of the updates for these classic Ultramarines?
