The Drukhari have a new codex on the way with updated rules. Let’s see how Power From Pain will work on the tabletop.

It’s been a long time coming. The Drukhari have been waiting patiently for their Codex and their time is coming. Today, we get a look at a few of their new rules in the updated codex. But arguably the most important rule for them is their Army Rule: Power From Pain. So let’s get into it!

“While the craftworld Aeldari escaped the doom of their empire and managed to avoid the worst aftershocks of Slaanesh’s birth, the Drukhari felt it much more keenly. They suffered a great spiritual rend in their souls that continues to slowly but surely drag their living essence into the Dark Prince’s realm. The only way to stave off this crawl into eternal damnation is to bask in waves of extreme emotional expression, feeding on pain, horror, and sorrow to infuse themselves with strength and vitality.”

Drukhari – Power From Pain

So, as you can see above, the Drukhari are still generating Pain Tokens in a similar manner. However, they will function slightly differently. Now, in stead of activating one of two generic abilities, each datasheet in the army will have it’s own Pain ability to use.

“These are in addition to the unit’s normal abilities, and every unit has one, from the lowliest Kabalite to the Queen of Knives herself.”

This change is a pretty big one. It certainly adds complexity to the Drukhari players options. However, it’s really going to come down to the individual Pain abilities. The usefulness of a unit can be greatly enhanced or diminished by what their Pain ability will be. Then again, maybe Drukhari will want some “fodder” units that won’t need to use the Pain tokens to be effective. It’s going to be interesting to see how this plays out. I’m also curious if they are going to be able to really generate the needed Pain tokens to keep them in the fight for the long term.

Drukhari Detachments

“As for Detachments, Realspace Raiders is much the same as it is in the index, but it now gives you a larger bounty for mixing and matching Kabalite, Wych, and Haemonculus units in your army. The Spectacle of Spite leans into Wyches with army-wide Combat Drugs – giving your gladiators a cocktail of thematic buffs – while the Covenite Coterie trusts in the natural resilience of the Drukhari’s flesh abominations to outlast your opponent.”

Another gnarly Detachment is the Skysplinter Assault Detachment. This one allows your Disembarking units to really pack a punch. Ranged weapons get to ignore cover while Melee Weapons gain the Lance ability! That could be pretty scary as the Drukhari zoom up the field, drop of their payload of units, and unleash withering firepower. Naturally, there’s also Enhancements and Stratagems for the various Detachments that lean into their playstyles.

Above is another Detachment and it’s rules. The Kabalite Cartel leans on this whole Contract mechanic to generate additional Pain tokens. And it also benefits you to run loads of Kabal and Blades for Hire units in your list, too. It also really leans on Archons and makes them extra deadly with the Enhancement options.
