Wizards of the Coast is looking at phasing out At-Home Prereleases for Magic: The Gathering.
During the COVID-19 pandemic era, when restrictions limited the viability of in-store Magic prereleases, WotC launched a program that offered up At-Home Prerelease kits for retailers to sell to fans so they could play at home (see “Extends Suspension of In-Store Play“). Five years later, WotC is finally looking at putting an end to this program as organized play has largely returned to happening at retail stores.
Based on the fact that this announcement came as part of an article that was explaining how retailers can use their Play Boosters supply to accommodate a lack of prerelease packs for the crowds of players expected for Avatar: The Last Airbender, prerelease product supply concerns may also have something to do with them looking at ending the At-Home Prerelease program. Regardless, they are testing a phase-out of the program in the EMEA, Australia, and New Zealand regions. It is more than likely that retailers will welcome the end of At-Home Prerelease program, primarily because it brings whatever players that are still using the At-Home kits back into their stores for organized play.
