The second part of Call of Cthulhu’s homage to both the King in Yellow and 1980s Japan, The Sutra of Pale Leaves, is here in Carcosa Manifest.
Call of Cthulhu has been pushing the bounds of its settings and time periods of late. From Victorian England in Cthulhu by Gaslight to 1980s Japan in the three-part Sutra of Pale Leaves campaign. You might have seen part 1, which began with Twin Suns Rising. Now the King in Yellow approaches in The Sutra of Pale Leaves: Carcosa Manifest. Thes econd part of this campaign takes you through four scenarios that, like Part 1 before it, can be run as individual adventures, or strung together into a big campaign.
Sutra of Pale Leaves: Carcosa Manifest
Four adventures all set in 1980s Japan await you in Carcosa Manifest. Over the course of this book, you’ll get a sense of just how the King in Yellow has been taking root in Japan. Here, the Yellow King is a mysterious, ominous, but also sometimes welcomed presence. Someone who helps the downtrodden and the poor and those with no one left to turn to.
Over the course of the four scenarios, you will see just how sometimes that help comes with a price. But before we get into it, I just want to point out the breadth of scenarios you get into here. They cover ground from Tokyo’s burgeoning fashion scene in the 80s, to the emergent computer gaming scene, and beyond.
It’s a dive into subculture and sorcery.
Whispers speak of the coming of the King in Yellow. The stars born and strange portents herald the arrival of Carcosa, the twilight city of wonder and horror…
Call of Cthulhu: The Sutra of Pale Leaves – Carcosa Manifest contains four scenarios for the unique setting of 1980s Japan. These scenarios can be played stand-alone, or strung together and combined with the scenarios from Twin Suns Rising to create a long-form campaign experience.
The Sutra of Pale Leaves part 2 is available now on DriveThruRPG. You’ll want at least the Call of Cthulhu core book to play with it, though there are optional rules out of Pulp Cthulhu that lend themselves well to this kind of campaign.
And don’t worry, there are pre-generated investigators and plenty of guides for running these as one shots, if that’s all you’re looking for. So, get ready, Tokyo stirs as the stars align.
You must have seen the yellow sign!
