The X-Men are getting a Starter Set box for Marvel: Crisis Protocol. Let’s find out if this one is a good way to get started.

So I’m a fan of the X-Men 90’s cartoon. It was a pretty formative memory for me as a kid and I really enjoyed rewatching it and X-Men ’97. I did that while painting MCP miniatures. I say all that to point out that I’m just a *tad* biased here. However, even with my bias I can’t argue with the math. So we’re going to do a pricing breakdown on the new X-Men Starter Set to figure out if this one is a good deal or not.

X-Men Starter Set Pricing Breakdown

*Currently, the X-Men Affiliation Pack is unavailable and appears to be pulled from the Asmodee store. I honestly can’t remember the price point but I think it was the same price as the Brotherhood of Mutants Affiliation Pack. And if it’s not, I know it was within $5 of that price.

I also want to mention that this box comes with all the cards you need for the characters inside — that includes the Team Tactic Cards, too. If you’re looking to play an X-Men themed roster this one has you covered. I also wanted to mention that this box is a perfect way into the Brotherhood of Mutants Affiliation as well. There’s a good reason Gambit and Rogue are included in this box.

This X-Men Starter Set is also a great gateway into (obviously) more X-Men characters and the other X-Men related Affiliations. X-Force in particular but there’s also New Mutants and even a step into Avengers if you want. Or Inhumans for that matter. With the right purchases you could have a really deep roster of characters spanning quite a few fun Affiliations.

Deal or No Deal?

So is this one a deal? Heck ya it’s a good deal! To circle back to the box itself, there are 10 characters in that box with multiple leaders. You could play quite a few lists just based on the contents alone as it’s a full 10-character roster right in the box. That’s kind of why this is such a good deal for new players. It’s also worth noting that you DO get all the movement/range tools and the dice in the box, too. Lots of folks want to forget that part and cut that out of the total savings on price.

But even if you did remove those items from the total, you’re still saving $74.99 off the miniatures alone. Also, given the fact that most of these miniatures are currently unavailable from their previous boxed sets, this might be the only way to get them for a while. So yeah, it’s still a deal regardless of how you slice it.

The only reason to skip on this box is if you already have all the contents. But, if you’re brand new to MCP or are just looking to get into it, this is a fantastic deal. You don’t have to be an X-Men fan from the the 90’s to appreciate that!
