More news on the WotC digital front, Hasbro unveils plans for a new video game studio in Montreal to support D&D specifically.

Hasbro-WotC is opening a new “game development hub” in the heart of Montreal, next to the other video game studio that WotC owns and is based out of Montreal. You know, it makes sense. The one’s already there, you know you’re gonna like the real estate, may as well go for it. But according to an announcement from WotC, the new video game studio will support D&D’s digital endeavors, while opening up new possibilities.

Maybe not quite like that, though

WotC To Open New D&D Video Game Studio Next to Its Old D&D Video Game Studio

A game development hub, eh? I don’t know if two studios makes a hub, but that’s certainly more studios than I’ve ever opened, so who am I to judge? At any rate, WoTC is in the process of opening a new D&D-focused video game studio in Montreal. D&D’s “head of franchise”, Dan Ayoub, will spearhead the new studio, meaning that the former Halo exec will return to where it all began.

Perhaps this new studio will host the “content team” that both Ayoub and WotC president John Hight have spoken on before. In a nutshell, this is a team dedicated to assisting WotC’s various video game development efforts by being immersed in the worlds of WotC, that way they don’t have to reinvent the Sword Coast with every project.

And it’s not a small studio, either. WotC’s new D&D video game studio will grow over the next three years, starting in 2026, to support a staff of around 200. According to Ayoub, this is the “natural choice” for WotC as it prepares for the next phase of the company’s gaming growth:

“As we ramp up our investment in digital gaming, Montreal is the natural choice. The city’s talent, creativity, and passion will be crucial as we craft immersive stories and experiences foro ur players. It feels incredible to return to the city where my career began in 1999, back when the gaming industry was just taking off.”

The studio will not be replacing Invoke Studios, but rather be next to them. Which means that Invoke is likely still working on something—after Dark Alliance, I’d be curious to see what else comes out of that studio. But whatever WotC’s new digital plans may be, it seems we’re only just at the beginning.

In the meantime, there’s Exodus, the upcoming sci-fi RPG and the as-yet-untitled D&D game from Giant Skull studios to look forward to.
