Star Trek Adventures wants you to make the galaxy your very own sandbox in a bold new expansion, fittingly titled The Exploration Guide.

Exploring strange new worlds is the literal mission statement of Starfleet. Sure, ultimately, what you get episode to episode is either dramatic, courtroom-style arguments about why they can’t/have to violate the Prime Directive this time. But the premise upon which all the arguments about human nature and hopeful optimism for an idyllic future that isn’t out of reach, if we try for it, is exploring the galaxy. Seeking out the unknown. That’s about as human as it gets.

And it’s also at the heart of the new Exploration Guide for Star Trek Adventures. This splatbook is an expansion dedicated to figuring out how to capture that sense of discovery. In the Exploration Guide, you’ll find all the tools you need for the next generation of your campaign.

Star Trek Adventures: Exploration Guide – Make The Galaxy Your Sandbox

In the Exploration Guide, you get more than just “sandbox campaign guidelines.” I mean, that’s probably the biggest draw for me, and what we’re gonna talk about most. But briefly, you’ll also get some new character options. There are two new career paths: Independent Archaeologists, for those of you, like Jean-Luc Picard, who can’t stop thinking about Vash. And Outpost Scientist, for those of you who want to be the weirdo that a crew finds on a planet who just wants to see what happens when the sun explodes up close.

There’s also a suite of new exploration related career events, 21 new character talents, and even honors that you can snag for yourself with acclaim, including the fabled Daystrom award. All the stuff you need to make an explorer, scientist, or adventurous captain.

But the real draw is using the tools in the book to make your very own planets and whole sectors of space. You can get in there and fill a galaxy map with all sorts of secrets, meaning you can just take the Exploration Guide and get yourself a tall ship and a star to steer her by, and let adventures slowly unfold.

“The Exploration Guide is essential reading for any Star Trek Adventures crew interested in expanding their characters, missions, and campaigns into the final frontier and creating new sectors, worlds, and environments to discover and explore.

Use the wealth of advice and random tables in this book to create original galactic sectors, star systems, planets, and planetary terrains, and then explore those unique locations in your crew’s original Star Trek stories.”

A big part of the sandbox tools are the random tables. I mean, listen, I will never stop espousing the advice of a good oracle table. We love them. They’re great – you roll some dice, and then interpret the meaning for your own self and the context within which you find it. It’s what we find so appealing about procedurally generated campaigns, and moreover, it engages the creative muscles.

But even more useful are the story hooks, new advanages, and complications you’ll find. With this book and the right group? You could make a whole season of your very own Star Trek show and then some.
