The Psion class is back, bringing with it a bold new look at the mind-over-matter class. This one seems like quite the hit.
Let’s not bury the lede here, the Psion class has a new update in a new Unearthed Arcana that leaves the psychically powered class in better shape than ever. WotC has gone in-depth in this overhaul, with overhauled class mechanics, subclasses, and more. We’ll be taking a closer look at each of them after the weekend, but for now? Here’s what the new Unearthed Arcana entails.
WotC Updates The Psion In New Unearthed Arcana
The digital ink isn’t even dry on the updated Arcane Subclasses survey, and WotC rolls out a new Unearthed Arcana. Either production is ramping up, or Dark Sun is closer than we thought. After all, famously, the Psion is connected to the scarred lands of Athas. But whatever the case, I’ll take it, because it means a whole new deep dive into the ins and outs of the mind.
There are a lot of quality-of-life improvements at play here, including a class-specific spell list, instead of it varying depending on which subclass you pick. Some of the fiddlier bits have been removed, and psionic modes are no more. But in its place, you get a lot of psionic empowerments.
And that’s just the base class. Everything seems to have been touched upon, including reworked psionic disciplines and a suite of new psionic spells. The temptation to call the spells is too great to ignore, but you should check them out regardless.
Moreso, though, the psionic subclasses have been reworked. In this Unearthed Arcana update, we get a new look at three of the four psionic subclasses. Why only three? Because the Psi Warper scored so well on the feedback that it has been moved on to whatever comes after playtesting.
But in the new Unearthed Arcana for the updated Psion, we get a look at the Metamorph, a subclass all about making your body into a weapon. It has seen some improvements to resilience overall, as well as getting a buff to psionic power die efficiency. There’s also an updated Psykinetic, who has even more telekinesis than ever. And finally a Telepath that can scramble brains as well as protect them.
