Starfinder Afterlight, the Starfinder video game, is powering through its Kickstarter goals, hitting more than 400% in the first day.
The people are hungry for video game RPGs. At least, if the latest Starfinder video game Kickstarter is anything to go by. Starfinder: Afterlight, Kickstarting now from Epicteller games, is currently smashing through its funding goals. This is not only the first ever video game foray into the Starfinder universe, it’s also a big one for Paizo as they branch out into different teams and developers. And from what we’ve seen so far? Starfinder Afterlight is looking great.
Starfinder: Afterlight – Style and Substance in a Sci-Fantasy RPG
One of the things that really sells me on the idea is the animation and the charm that we see in the trailer and in gameplay reveals. We got a look at some of the characters just a month ago, it seems. This is going to be a party-driven RPG, and that means needing larger-than-life space heroes. Or, at least, people who might be heroes. If you squint.
After all, the whole idea behind Starfinder: Afterlight is that you’re taking control of your crew and your destiny as the narrative unfolds. You create your own custom character, meet a crew of six misfits, scoundrels, and maybe the occasional competent person, and then head out into the stars.
It’s a classic formula. Even in the Kickstarter, they tease “Divinity: Original Sin meets Guardians of the Galaxy.“
“Gather your crew and venture into the Pact Worlds in a tale of unlikely heroes, cosmic wonders, and the bonds that define us. Starfinder: Afterlight is the first cRPG in Paizo’s science-fantasy universe. Divinity: Original Sin meets Guardians of the Galaxy. Magic and lasers collide, and your dysfunctional space family will determine the galaxy’s fate.”
The rest you can figure out pretty easily. You’ve got turn-based tactical combat, Starfinder style. You level up, collect loot, interact with NPCs across the galaxy. But I will say one thing that Epictellers try to hammer home is that you can try to do what you want. In their words, “nothing is forbidden, everything has consequences.”
This means a sprawling, branching narrative defined by your choices. Your successes and your failures (or at the very least your ability to save scum). Including which of your crew companions you romance. How do you tackle the problems of the campaign? And of course, which stretch goals will you unlock. So far, backers have unlocked the ability to play as Skittermanders, more voice acting in the game, and are well on their way to even more.
Starfinder Afterlight runs for the next 28 days!
