The Warhammer 40,000 Road Map is at it’s end. The Drukhari have landed. The Holiday boxes are announced. What’s next for 40k?
The forward march of time continues. As we’re pushing on well into October now the Drukhari have hit the shelves. We’re at a strange point in the life cycle of a Warhammer 40,000 edition: we’re basically at the end.
The last official 40k Road Map we got was back in April. We’re well past that now. As I predicted back in July, we got the Drukhari Codex and now the edition is basically complete. That’s leaving me with a weird feeling. I’m glad we’re at the “end” point of this edition but there still feels like something is missing.
What’s Next For Warhammer 40,000?
In previous editions, around this point in the cycle, we’d start to get some sort of major event spun up. Typically there’s a big tease, a bunch of marketing videos, or some sort of community campaign thing. We had the Aeldari End Times/Ynnari stuff. There was the Fall of Cadia. And let’s not forget the whole Pariah Nexus or the Arks of Omen events.
It seems like we’re about due for one of these major events at this point in the cycle. But then we’ll hit the “the game is too bloated with all these rules” part of the cycle and boom, we’ll have 11th edition on the horizon.
Honestly, I’m not sure how to feel about this repeating cycle. I’m kind of over it when I really think about it. What if GW really does something radical and just …doesn’t do a new edition for a while?
Personally, I would like to see some big event happen and a moving forward of the narrative. I want to see the 40k universe advance in time again. Lorewise, I actually DO like change. I don’t want to see the game regress back to the “1 second before midnight” style we had for the early editions. The story of 40k advancing and developing in new directions is healthy in that regard. At the same time I would like some closure to many of the narrative threads that have been left to dangle.
Still, I feel like there is something missing from this edition of 40k. The rules are complete a this point with every army getting their codex (sorry Chaos Daemons, you’re out this time). I also think we’re at a good point with many of the armies and their miniature ranges, too. The Leagues of Votann got a nice injection of units this go around which was needed. And sure, there’s always gaps and armies that can use more units. But overall, I think the game is actually in a good state in that regard.
So yeah…that’s kind of where we are right now. Hopefully we’ll get something to show off on Warhammer Day. The event miniatures are cool and so is the art. But are we even having a preview show that day? I guess we’ll find out on October 25th, 2025. Until then I’m going to be wondering “what’s next for 40k?”
Do you want another “event” for the end of the edition? What else do you think GW has in store for us?
