Warhammer 40K: Dark Heresy, the video game, might be closer than you think – apparently, an alpha release is around the corner!

As part of IGN’s Fall Fan Fest 2025, Warhammer 40K: Dark Heresy developers Owlcat Studios announced a surprise alpha release. And if you know anything about 40K, then you know just how appropriate a sneaky appearance by anything “alpha” related is. Alpha release, alpha legion, alpha rius, it’s all the same. Not that I’m implying I know anything about what the Alpha Legion is up to.

But Owlcat might. As might your Inquisitor once you start going through the adventure of Dark Heresy. Which you can do starting sometime in Q4, which is now through the end of the year. So sooner than you might think.

Dark Heresy – Alpha Release Trailer

And what a trailer. We get a little bit more of a glimpse into the world of Dark Heresy, but just a tease. Enough to whet the appetite for the twisting tales of heresy to come. Though if you’ve played the TTRPG Dark Heresy, you know full well that it’s about getting in well over your head while enmeshed in the horrors of the grim darkness of the distant future.

Only this time, you’ll be doing it in a turn-based, isometric RPG where you can make a cadre of agents, aides, and assassins (and plenty more) as you recruit people to your party. Then, of course, you have to decide just what “faithful to the Emperor” means to you, as you try to navigate between pragmatism and a strict Imperial orthodoxy that demands retribution of all and believes “innocence proves nothing.”

Just another day in the Imperium.

“Step into the shadows as an acolyte of the Inquisition in Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy, a second narrative-driven tactical RPG set in the beloved grimdark universe. Set against the backdrop of the Noctis Aeterna and the mystery of the Tyrant Star, players will lead a warband of diverse companions in a desperate battle against heresy and corruption — from loyal Imperial subjects, such as a veteran Guardsman from the death world of Catachan, to nefarious xenos, including a bird-like Kroot mercenary.

With intricate investigations, a turn-based combat system, and choices that carry grave consequences, Dark Heresy is set to deliver an atmospheric dive into the brutality and mysticism of one of the Imperium’s most feared organizations. The game greatly expands on the ideas introduced in Rogue Trader and features fully voiced dialogues.”

All that to say, you can actually take the game for a spin real soon. That’s pretty exciting. Of course, it’ll just be the alpha build, meaning that things are likely to change wildly over the next few years. But if you want to get your hands on the game from the beginning, to leave your mark upon the evolution, then soon you’ll have a chance to do exactly that.

And if you can’t wait, then there’s always the simultaneously announced Rogue Trader port coming soon to the Switch 2.

Dark Heresy is back, now in video game form!
