In a big new merchandising deal, Netflix signs both Mattel and Hasbro to work on KPop Demon Hunters merch, including “role play” from WotC.
Hasbro, Mattel, and Netflix—three giant companies all circle the unexpected megahit of the year, KPop Demon Hunters. It was beyond time to figure out just who’s going to make all that money. Don’t worry—it’s almost certainly not going to be the creators of the property.
Executives still haven’t recovered since George Lucas managed to make Fox foolish back in 1977. But someone is going to get rich off of the unprecedented “dual co-master toy license structure” deal. It seems to touch on every wing of Mattel and Hasbro, including—and this is where I come in—Wizards of the Coast.
Is Hasbro Going to Make WotC Do a KPop Demon Hunters RPG?
Variety originally reported on the megadeal, detailing the extraordinary demand for KPop Demon Hunters stuff, which is obvious. It failed to point out the irony of the movie’s message about the dangers of soulless consumption while also getting hyped up about Huntr/x and Saja Boys “dolls, games, and merchandise.”
But to be fair, this is the same reality where people saw Squid Games and thought, “yeah but we should do that for real.” And then they did. A couple of times. But hey, media literacy is besides the point. Especially when we could be talking about a potential KPop Demon Hunters RPG.
And that is absolutely one of the things Hasbro is eyeing with the deal, they call out both WotC and role play in the article:
“Hasbro’s ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ collection of products will span such categories as special-feature plushies, youth electronics, and role play. In addition, Hasbro will create collaborations between ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ and other properties, including Hasbro Games, Wizards of the Coast, Nerf, and Furby.”
Now, it’s anyone’s guess as to what that means. But I would bet you money that we will see a KPop Demon Hunters x Magic: the Gathering Universes Beyond set in the not too distant future. If I were WotC that’s just a license to print money, maybe as much as the Final Fantasy set did. Maybe more. Especially with WotC hurting after the Spider-Man crossover flopped like it did; there’s no way we don’t see at least a Secret Lair with KPop Demon Hunters.
And then there’s the role play element. Now, it could be that role play means toys that let you dress up as Rumi, Mira, and Zoey. But I wouldn’t be surprised if the other thing we see is a D&D crossover adventure. Maybe a la the Stranger Things starter set, which is out right now. Though you know what, with how popular it is, I would not be surprised if there was a campaign setting book somewhere in there. But they’d have to be quick to catch the zeitgeist wave before we move on to the next big thing.
But c’mon, admit it, you would play a KPop Demon Hunters RPG. It’s okay, this is a safe space!
