GW’s next release for 40k is a big ole pile of Terminators. Let’s look at what the heck can I do with all these chonky bois on the tabletop.
Goatboy here and the next release we are getting for 40k is a big ole pile of Terminators. We are getting the updated Assault Terminators and a new Terminator Ancient to help round out the whole pile expensive chunky Space Marine Bois. My question this week is what to do with them and then some thoughts on how to fix them later during my hot mess shakedown. Let’s look at what the heck can I do with all these models.
Between this release and the starter set you should have a big ole pile of Terminators. If you exchanged one half of the starter to get double your marine output, you start to have somewhere along the lines of 25 terminators. I think it would be easy to find another 5 more and then do some bit work to get you 30 Assault Terminator options if you want. You can start to see how my terrible little Goatbrain is working through the idea of fielding 30+ terminators and somehow making the army work.
Assault Terminators 101
First – these 30 Assault terminators are not designed to be very punchy. They hit on a 4+ with a Thunder Hammer with a kind of mediocre number of attacks. You could use your Oath target to hit more but it isn’t something to fear. What they do have is a hole pile of wounds, a 4+ invulnerable save, and a good armor save. All of this combines into something that isn’t aggressive but instead is built to “stat” check your opponent into oblivion.
Which leads me to looking at detachments that basically make my terminator bois tougher and harder to deal with. This usually means ways to make the harder to hit or ways to make them harder to wound. If you make the unit harder to wound, you do better in keeping this giant pile of terminators alive longer. There are a lot of things that let armies reroll hits but not nearly as many rerolls to wound.
Enter The Dark Angels, Stage Left
There isn’t a Feel No Pain option detachment right now in the regular Marines but there is a make the wound roll worse detachment in Dark Angels. The Wrath of the Rock let’s all infantry get the ability to be -1 to wound if the strength of the attack is greater than their toughness. This is huge for Terminator Blocks as a default rule you don’t have to spend any CP on. On top of that you get a few fun stratagems to utilize if you need too.
You get the normal default Armor of Contempt. You get the ability to pick a new Oath Target if you kill the initial one. You can add an additional OC to a unit and when you combine it with an Ancient you could have a 30+ OC unit sitting on an objective. You have an Advance and charge option. You also can declare a charge even if your opponent didn’t charge you. These are all interesting tech pieces in an army designed to get to a central objective and camp out.
Oh – and you could also take the Lion as another piece to help keep your boys alive, get a bully unit, and a fun redeploy option as well. You also get access to a few more Terminators as well with Deathwing Knights at your disposal to help give you some 5-man units to play the field with. Just having a few good “attack” options as your thick bois sit on objectives.
Let’s throw this together so you can see this hot mess.

WTH 38 Terminators Tactics!
You have 38 Terminator bodies. You have the Lion. You even have some Intercessors that can sticky your home objective. Your plan is to move forward, camp out like your waiting for some Pokémon cards, and get ready to just roll some saves. This is an army designed to not take too long to get the job done – which is holding objectives for the Emperor! We could also call it the Lion’s Baby Sitters.
For the Emperor!
