Vaesen, the award-winning TTRPG, gets even more gothic in a new, Eastern-European-folklore-fueled expansion, Mythic Carpathia.
Vaesen – Nordic Horror Roleplaying is a “gothic TTRPG” of dark horrors and darker woods put out by Free League Publishing, makers of the ALIEN RPG and the newest The One Ring. It has won awards for its atmospheric writing and playstyle that draws you deeper into the horrors of the old myths of Scandinavia. Only now, the setting heads out for other shores, where other horrors lay in the shadows, waiting to be explored.
Vampires, Rusalkas, the Baba Yaga, and more besides await in the pages of Mythic Carpathia. This new splatbook is fueled by Eastern European folklore, so get ready to head for Prague and strange things beyond.
Vaesen: Mythic Carpathia – Out Now
And what an expansions. It’s not just a campaign setting, in Mythic Carpathia, you’ll find a new archetype for player characters; the cunning and driven Vampire Hunter, as well as new adventures to play. But the main draw is, of course, the new old world.
There are 16 new monsters detailed in the book itself. As you might know from other Vaesen titles, this means you get story seeds, background lore, and stats. And given the folkloric sources, you’ll recognize most of the creatures here.
The draw of the denizens of the dark is strong. But perhaps you can discover how to navigate them:
“Venture into Mythic Carpathia to face Vampires, Rusalkas, Baba Yaga, and other even stranger horrors of Central and Eastern European folklore. Wander the busy streets of Prague, where history and myths collide. Visit old cities, deep forests, and high mountains to face creatures beyond belief.”
Besides the monster section and the new campaign setting stuff, you’ll also find three adventures. These are short mysteries that help unfold the world as it is laid out in the setting book. There’s one set in Prague, one in Ukraine, and one in Transylvania. That’s about as classic horror as it gets.
The full book is available now, along with a new starter set!
No word on if Mythic Carpathia will include the infamous Vigo, my guess is no, but hey, you never know!
