Paizo cracked open the pages of the upcoming Monster Core 2 for Pathfinder to preview two new dragons: the Requiem and Despair dragons.

Pathfinder will soon expand its collection of creatures even further with a brand new bestiary: the Monster Core 2. This is an updated compendium of new friends, new foes, and everything in between—using the new Pathfinder 2E Remastered ruleset. And one of the biggest things coming under the ruleset change are the dragons. Pathfinder has steadily been rolling out new dragons with their own identities and themes and terrifying abilities, and today we get a look at two of them: the Requiem Dragon and the Despair Dragon.

Pathfinder 2E Monster Core 2 – Dragon Preview Requiem Dragons and Despair Dragons

Over on the Paizo blog, we got a look at how the new dragons will work, starting with the Requiem Dragon. These are “divine dragons” who are tasked with the caretaking of souls. Like psychopomps, they help shepherd souls to their destinations after they pass on. And to that end, they have a lot of power to see and shepherd life.

Requiem Dragons have a link to life which lets them determine the Hit Points of any creatures they can see. In other words, they have access to health bars. Which is something I know that many players would want to get their hands on. They can also stabilize a creature, linking their soul to their body and keeping them from slipping into death. And they breathe a literal line of doom.

Meanwhile, the Despair Dragon is much more menacing. It’s an occult dragon, making it has a compulsion to feed on something esoteric, in this case, fear:

“In their case, they must feed on fear in addition to their typical sustenance. Despair dragons are shrewd and scheming creatures, using their abilities to seek useful sources of anguish. Some despair dragons delight in their hunt for fear, diving deep into wickedness to fulfill their needs. Others dread their very nature and choose to hunt creatures they feel are deserving of torment. It’s not uncommon for a despair dragon to agonize a local tyrant or a vile criminal.”

Big and small, the Monster Core 2 has them all.

“Despite how far heroes travel or how many times they save the day, there are always new monsters lurking just around the corner. Pathfinder Monster Core 2 is a 376-page hardcover bursting with brand-new creatures as well as updated Pathfinder classics waiting to find a place at your table. The lavishly illustrated tome also includes guidelines for reading monster entries and adjusting existing monsters to tailor-fit your story! This book is a must-have for Game Masters ready to bring new and exciting challenges to their games!

Pathfinder Monster Core 2 makes use of the updated rules for the fully remastered Pathfinder Second Edition RPG! These rules are compatible with previous Pathfinder Second Edition rulebooks, incorporating comprehensive errata and rules updates and some of the best additions from later books into new, easier-to-access volumes with new presentations inspired by years of player feedback.”

The more esoteric, the less likely it is that your whole party is going to make it through the encounter. At any rate, you can find these and more in Pathfinder 2E Monster Core 2, due out November 5th!

Requiem Dragon is *definitely* a boss in a FromSoft game!
