Sirius Miniatures is launching a new line of metal miniatures, inspired by the original 1977 boxes set of D&D.
I don’t know what it is about this time of year, but it feels like the nostalgia vibes are hitting hard. Maybe it’s because it speaks to the days of being a harvest festival to survive the coming winter. Maybe it’s because Stranger Things Season 5 is coming out in a few weeks. Either way, the retro vibes are strong. Especially the new line of metal D&D miniatures in the works from Sirius Miniatures.
Licensed from Hasbro, these new miniatures are inspired by the original 1977 Basic Boxed Set of D&D. Which means you get miniatures with a classic look, and immaculate style. As long as you think the style depicted on the cover art is/was immaculate. Let’s take a look!
D&D Retro 1977 Minis – Basic Boxed Set
The new set is called the 1977 D&D Holmes Boxed Set. Taking its name from the original 1977 Basic Set. If you are wondering where Holmes comes in this is because the rules for the basic setbwere designed by John Eric Holmes, based on the rules in D&D originally designed by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson.
This was pre-AD&D, though likely developed alongside it. Hence the “Basic” vs. “Advanced” nomenclature. It’s a winding pedigree, but the upshot of it all is that the rules were slightly different. But the fantasy vibes were the same, as you can see in the cover art will feature three metal miniatures based on the cover art by David C. Sutherland III
In this first set, you’ll get three miniatures, the Wizard, Fighter, and Dragon.
“Step back into the golden age of tabletop roleplaying with the Sirius Metal Miniatures: 1977 D&D Holmes Boxed Set—the first release in the Sirius Miniatures line. Inspired by the iconic artwork of David C. Sutherland III, this collector’s edition miniature set faithfully recreates one of Dungeons & Dragons’ most legendary battles in a durable Zinc alloy.”
Each of the miniatures is done up in a zinc alloy and is full of 1977 detail. You can look for these from Sirius at the link below, with fulfilment expected in 2026. This is just the first wave of retro minis, so keep an eye out for more!
There’s just something about a Wizard in a robe covered in handmade stars you don’t see anymore!
