Last week I talked about the Abilities chapter of the upcoming SAGE roleplaying game—that is, our streamlined multi-genre Simple Adventure Game Engine. This week I turned my attention to the Bonds chapter.
Starting with the rules for Relationships that first entered an AGE core rulebook with Blue Rose, Bonds stood out for me as a fantastic idea I added as an option to Modern AGE. Relationship Bonds had such great potential I played with other types of Bonds, such as Divine Bonds in Fantasy AGE Trojan War, where they measured how gods felt about you, to Enlightenment and Terror Bonds in Cthulhu Awakens, which measure your psychic attachment to the powers and alien concepts of the Mythos.
In SAGE, Bonds work a bit differently, providing a mixture of Fortune and stunt points, instead of just the stunt options in classic AGE games. In SAGE, Bonds are designed to fuel Fortune, which measures a character’s dramatic privilege: how they can use their story importance to avoid unwanted problems.
SAGE Bonds also apply to more than relationships. They include Beliefs, personal Eccentricities, Bonds with Organizations and Material things, as well as special dedication in a skill, or Talents.
This chapter ended up at about 3000 words, providing the basic concepts and examples of each type of Bond—pretty straightforward. Now it’s time to tackle Fortune in SAGE—and I’ll tell you about it next time.
